Hammond began participating in local talent contests from 1972 to 1973, which led to his first recording, of Ellis' "Wanderer".
Beres Hammond returned briefly to Jamaica to record Putting Up Resistance, which was significantly harder than his typical ballads, under Tapa Zukie, which spawned the hits "Putting Up Resistance" and "Strange." He signed with Penthouse Records in 1990 and returned to Jamaica permanently to record the dancehall smash "Tempted to Touch" with producer Donovan Germain.
Now garnering interest from major studios such as Electra Records, Beres recorded five more albums in the 1990s as well as several compilations, establishing himself as one of the top lovers rock artists.

It was 12:45am when the compere introduced the man himself and as Beres Hammond strolled on stage dressed in a blue linen trouser suit, fl leather cap and fl dress shoes, the crowd cheered loudly.
Beres gave a shout out to the Leeds people before he moved onto ‘Come Back Home’ and he asked the crowd if they remembered Garnet Silk before he covered ‘Mama Africa’ and then he went onto perform ‘Tempted To Touch’.
Beres seemed to be quite enjoying it but a security man wasn’t so accommodating and untangled the woman before placing her back in the crowd.
