The Special Forces model for near all intents and purposes is identicial to the previsous design, though tritium night sights were made available for this model.

An additional fact is Beretta is better known around the world (and yes in the USA) for their shotguns rather than their pistols.
It was my understanding that the target audience were members of the Beretta Forum, and I'm sure they all know that a 92 and a 96 are effectively the same.
The same is true of Cougars, the word "Cougar" is not in the model number, it is an 8000, but "8000 Cougar" heads every page.
