Beretta 92 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Beretta decided to use 5,000 semi finished slides intended for the French to build pistols for the US military contract and soon after the US Armed forces accepted these pistols, a few slides of Beretta 92Fs (less than 10 total) and some older Beretta 92SBs started to crack and fly off.
Beretta remedied the situation by change the spring's design so that each leg is similar allowing it to be inverted in case one leg fails until a replacement can be fitted.
Beretta manufactures a kit to convert an FS model to shoot.22 LR, because it is easier to shoot and the ammunition is cheaper.

Beretta 92F/FS   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-28)
After the interest the Beretta 92SB had created in law enforcement, with sports shooting circles, with the US Armed Forces, Beretta refined the design of the Beretta 92SB into the Beretta 92SB-F and in slightly modified form the Beretta 92G.
Beretta modified the Beretta 92SB slightly, first it redesigned all the parts in such a way that they would be interchangeable between pistols, in order to simplify maintenance for large government organisations.
Beretta would also design a new slide, but this slide would not be disclosed nor enter production as the reason for the slide failures had been discovered.

 Beretta 92FS
Beretta redesigned the gun with a slide-mounted safety, which when the lever is pressed downward, not only disengages the trigger but also decocks the hammer and trigger.
Beretta submitted the 92S, but although it did well, the USAF wanted a more traditional magazine release like that on the 1911A1, so Beretta redesigned the 92S into the (extremely rare) 92S-1, with a magazine release at thumb level.
Although the Beretta won the USAF trials, politics got involved for various reasons, (mainly that some Americans didn't want Italian guns, 9mm guns, or yet another different gun, depending on whose version of the story you listen to) and the whole project went on the back burner for awhile.

I find the Beretta so bulky as to be totally unmanagable in high-speed shooting, though it's okay for slow SA shooting at the square range.
