Beretta 92 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Beretta 92 pistol evolved from earlier Beretta designs, most notably the M1922 and M1951.
The Beretta 93R is a 92 modified significantly to provide the option of firing in three-round bursts.
Taurus modified the original Beretta 92 design, and its recent pistols have the magazine release located behind the trigger guard, and different safeties that act as decocking levers when pulled down and trigger locks when pushed up, presenting the end-user with a different variety of safety options.

Beretta 96D - Beretta-E   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
The Beretta 96D is simply a Beretta 96 that is double-action only.
There is no safety on this pistol and it handles similar to a double-action revolver, with a long trigger pull for every shot.
The Beretta 96DS has a safety added to its slide but is otherwise the same thing than the Beretta 96D.

The Beretta experienced zero malfunctions, which greatly pleased me although I would have been surprised with any other outcome.
I think Beretta missed the boat in discontinuing this model and not capitalizing on the advantages of their DAO pistols.
This is an ideal gun for revolver fans that are used to shooting in double action and would like their defensive gun in a different caliber or with more firepower.

I carried a Beretta 92FS 9mm for over two and a half years and I would trade my duty SIG 229 in 40 cal. for a Beretta.
I was issued the BP 96D and, while I wasn't thrilled with the trigger, it still was very reliable and accurate.

I honestly can't say exactly which is better, but the factors he said matter not in my book unless the Beretta is too big to conceal and the USP is just right.
I have concealed a 92 FS BRG so a 96 is not a problem the guns don't jam thats the good thing about Beretta but USP's are nice guns and you can currently order LEO trade ins from CDNN for 350 to 400 and they are very nice a coworker just got one.

While the learning curve for the masses is not as steep as say for a 1911, you certainly give up the ability to place your shots at extended range due to the long pull of the trigger.
As you may know, OSHP had a NP3d Beretta 96D as their sidearm also, and also had problems with them.
I, also, believe that this is the reason for Beretta adding an ounce of weight to the slide on the newer models.

Its designed to be worn in the strong position, but I have used it in a crossdraw configuration with success.
I don't use the 96D for concealed carry very often because the wide grip (staggered mag) makes it a little bulky compared to a single stack mag.45.

 10 - SOL:BERETTA 96D BRIGADIER .40 CALIBER SEMI-AUTOMATIC (06/28/96)
The Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) intends to issue a sole source, contract to Beretta U.S.A. Corp., 17601 Beretta Drive, Accokeek, MD 20607, for.40 caliber semi-automatic pistols, Beretta model 96D Brigadier.
Due to unanticipated increased levels of funds authorized for INS hiring of officers during fiscal years 1995, 1996, and beyond, the five year maximum quantity under COW-5-C-0002 was ordered in September of 1995, four years earlier than expected, and the contract expired at that time.
Standardization on this pistol is required to ensure compatibility and interchangeability among the various components, which is essential to the timely supply of handguns to personnel, will reduce procurement and training costs and improve the overall safety of INS officers as well.
