Smyk and his wife, Lida (also a native of Berezhany) tackled the project with zest, setting up a traveling exhibit of Lepkiiana in the United States and Canada, which included stops in such cities as Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, Philadelphia, New York, Edmonton and Winnipeg and Toronto.
He returned to Berezhany in 1991 and continued with plans for the Bohdan Lepkyi Museum, which was opened in 1995 with the participation of Dr. Smyk.
Already an honorary citizen of both Zhukiv and Berezhany, as well as an honorary member of the Prosvita Society in Ukraine and a recipient of both the Brothers Lepkyi Prize and the Volodymyr Vynnychenko Prize of the Ukrainian Cultural Fund, Dr. Smyk remains humble.

By the common decision of the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Agriculture and the foodstuffs of Ukraine Berezhany technical school of mechanization and electrification of agriculture was reorganized into the Berezhany agrotechnical college - higher educational institution of the second accreditation level with the right of training junior experts and bachelors.
Berezhany agrotechnical college was included in the structure of National Agricultural University of Ukraine.

Berezhany (former Polish Brzezany) is a small town in Western Ukraine which was part of the USSR in 1939-1991.
Berezhany is administrative center of Berezhany district with about 19.000 inhabitants, mostly Galician Ukrainains (10.000 in 1939, among them there were 400 Galician Ukrainians/Ruthenians, 6.600 Poles and 3.000 Jews, most of whom were shot by Germans at the Holocaust time and are burried in mass grave at the large Jewish cemetery of Berezhany).
