Battle of Berezina - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Battle of Berezina was held on November 26-29, 1812 between the French army of Napoleon retreating after his invasion of Russia and crossing the Berezina (near Barysau, now Belarus), and Russian army under Kutuzov.
Nevertheless, the crossing of the river Berezina brought about another major defeat of French, as Kutuzov, deciding that the time was right for an open battle, attacked and crushed the rearguard part of the French army under Marshal Claude Victor-Perrin that defended the crossing.
The total loss of French in the battle is estimated by 36,000 killed, including straddlers and camp-followers that were left on the right bank because Napoleon ordered to burn the bridges to stop Russians.

Reaching the Berezina river near Borisov, Napoleon was trapped between Tshitshagov (Chitchagov), who had circled ahead of Napoleon, and Kutuzov's forces to Napoleon's rear, led by General Wittgenstein.
Tshitshagov held the bridge over the Berezina river near the village of Borisov and the western shore.
Marshal Oudinot and the French engineers in his II Corps managed to build two pontoon bridges across the river, which was not solidly iced over, at Studenka, eight miles north of the bridgehead held by Tshitshagov, thanks to diversionary tactics by Napoleon.

Along with her partner in rhyme, Nina Berezina, she's created Two Women, No Mascara, an original comedy piece that thankfully avoids both the stereotypes associated with stand-up routines and the brand of predictable, audience-directed improvisation that's threatening to become the bane of happy hours everywhere.
Instead, Wagner and Berezina deliver sketch comedy a la vintage Saturday Night Live, complete with rapid-fire costume changes and a degree of sheer physical bravado that one might not expect from a couple of otherwise well-behaved Colorado gals.
As Berezina tells it, "We've always had a good rapport with each other, both creatively and as friends." Before long, they were holding entire conversations in voices other than their own.

Chapter Chapter 10 of War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy
And the crossing of the Berezina, of which so much has been written, was only one of the intermediate stages of the destruction of the army, and by no means the decisive episode of the campaign.
On the Russian side, the reason that so much has been made of Berezina was simply that at Petersburg, far away from the theatre of war, a plan had been devised (again by Pfuhl of all people) for catching Napoleon in a strategic snare on the banks of the Berezina.
In reality the results of Berezina were less ruinous to the French in loss of cannons and prisoners than was the fighting at Krasnoe, as statistics prove.

The farther they fled the more wretched became the plight of the remnant, especially after the Berezina, on which (in consequence of the Petersburg plan) special hopes had been placed by the Russians, and the keener grew the passions of the Russian commanders, blamed one another and Kutuzov most of all.
