Precipitation is not unusual in the park, the flora is a micro-rain forest of fir, spruce, cedar, moss and ferns.
The trail from Kinney Lake Campground to Whitehorn was a big surprise, on one hand it was typical of a path leading through a conifer forest, it had a cushiony feel under foot, like walking on a dry sponge.
Berg lake was named because of the small icebergs floating in the water beneath the glaciers.

Lake had an interest in flight….and spent the better part of that evening reviewing the Wright patents and came to the conclusion that the brothers’ claims were justifiable and that the plane would fly.
So there you have it, Simon Lake, the man inspired by Jules Vernes’ “2000 Leagues Under the Sea” who developed the first practical submarine, was a mentor, business associate and friend of the Wright brothers, and played a role in the development and marketing of their invention, the airplane.

Kinney Lake is a popular day-hiking destination, as it's not very far from the trailhead, with the south end of the lake a bit more than three miles from the trailhead, and there isn't much rise in the trail.
The lake is quite long, perhaps a mile, and the trail follows its shoreline to the east.
Kinney Lake, Whitehorn, Berg Lake, and Robson Pass have shelters for cooking in the rain, which is very convenient, as the normal weather pattern is rain from the late afternoon into the night, with clearing in the morning - sometimes rather late in the morning.

Berg Lake campsite is the largest site (26 campsites) and has a log cabin with picknick tables, wood stove, rack to hang wet clothes and food storage, a nice place to warm up and eat in cooler temperatures.
From most sites you can see the lake but are situated in the trees to protect you from the elements, if you are lucky you can see pieces of Berg Glacier "calf off" and fall into Berg Lake, there are frequent rumblings from the glaciers as small and large pieces break off and slide.
Snow Bird Pass (full day) This 22 km round trip starting from Berg Lake is well worth the trip, but is not for those in poor shape or those who don't like heights as the trail primarily goes along the mountainside.

About 14,000 years ago in what is now central Minnesota, Ringo Lake was formed from ice blocks in the out wash and till deposits of a receding glacier called the Des Moines Lobe.
It is 774 acres in size and part of a chain of lakes which drain southward, eventually to the Minnesota then Mississippi River.
In the 1870's my father's family settled on the north side of Ringo Lake, establishing a farm that is home to it's fifth generation of descendants.

Give yourself a few days for this trip, while you can make it into Berg Lake in one day its better to take a couple and spend an extra day at Berg Lake.
Berg Lake is spectacular with the Berg Glacier dipping into the lake right across from your campsite.

We then headed south toward Mt. Thor's west ridge and followed the drainage west which leads directly to the east face of the Needles and Whitney About 1/2 Mile before the buttress, there is a break in the cliffs on the right side giving way to a 100ft.
This route may not be as short as the direct approach at the west end of Upper Boy Scout Lake but it is definitely easier.
