Bergerac (TV series) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bergerac also had several sidekicks during the series who were generally detective constables and hardly any crime could be solved without the help of Crozier's redoubtable secretaries Charlotte (Annette Badland) and Peggy (Nancy Mansfield).
Jim Bergerac was a complex character and presented by the series as a somewhat unorthodox cop.
In keeping with his maverick and adventurous style, Bergerac drove a burgundy 1947 Triumph Roadster (a forerunner of the TR-6 and TR-7) which, with its long bonnet, was a vehicle totally unsuited to the narrow and winding Jersey roads with their speed limits as low as twenty miles per hour.

His co-stars included Carol Cleveland and, as his wife, Wanda Ventham, seen in "The Gravediggers" and a frequent blonde 'swinging chick' in 60s series and sitcoms; later, she was among the mourners at his funeral.
However, in a TV Times article the week "To Catch a Rat" aired, Hendry explained an off-screen fondness for painting by saying that when he had something to express, he didn't hit the bottle any more, or hit people, but hit the canvas.
Around 1967 he was in one of three TV dramas, on similar themes, by a much-hyped but now completely forgotten writer called Kenneth Jupp, and Honor Blackman was in one of the others, all made for Anglia.

 BBC - h2g2 - 'Bergerac' - the TV Series
A whole generation of UK television viewers was weaned on the boyish good-looks of the protagonist, played by John Nettles; the waggish, eccentric playboy-millionaire lifestyle of that most loveable of rogues, Charlie Hungerford; and the other (less-important) things that other (less-important) people did throughout.
Jim Bergerac offered an alternative to the anti-heroism of the Starsky and Hutch-esque, macho cop of the early 1980s who resented authority and got the dirtiest jobs done by flaunting well-established police procedure, doling out unwarranted levels of violence and becoming unnecessarily confrontational with his superiors.
His winsome grin and chirpy optimism always won through and he still managed to remain on good terms with the chief of police.
