The 9mm Bergmann Bayard built by AEP for the Danish army (Model 1910).
Theodor Bergmann, a German industrialist, hired a gun designer and developed a series of automatic pistols at the turn of the century.
Bergmann licensed the gun design to the Societe Anonyme Anciens Etablissments Pieper (AEP) of Herstal, Belgium (page 371), which called the pistol the Bayard.

 Bergmann Bayard M1910/21
The Bergmann Bayard 1910/21 was the final evolution of the Bergmann self-loading pistol first designed in 1903 as the Bergmann Mars.
Mauser and Bergmann came upon a similar approach, utilizing a bolt mechanism to extract and eject the spent cartridge casing and cock the hammer on the recoil stroke and, as the bolt rebounded, strip a round from the magazine and lock it into battery (a simple explanation for what was a relatively complicated operation).
Bergmann and Schmeisser went back to the drawing board again and in 1897 made another change, introducing a removable magazine and the basic pistol configuration that would become characteristic of all future Bergmann designs.

9mm Cartridges of the World: Past and Present - www.ezboard.com
It was one of several cartridges developed by Theodor Bergmann for his Bergmann "Mars" Model 1903 pistol, which was available in several chamberings.
The Bergmann "Mars" pistol was not a great commercial success, and Bergmann sold the rights in 1907 to the Belgian firm of Pieper.
Developed in 1908 as the 9mm Bayard Long, the cartridge is an updated version made possible by Bayard's improvements to the basic Bergmann design.

Notes: This weapon was designed by Theodor Bergmann, but he ran into financial difficulties and in 1907 sold the rights to the Bergmann-Bayard to Pieper.
Pieper renamed if the Bayard, but the designer’s name is so well known that is it is almost always referred to as the Bergmann-Bayard.
The initial models were sold to the Spanish Army, then to the Greeks.

A bit of history on the Bergmann pistol, from "Pistols of the World", by Hogg and Weeks.
Bergmann secured a contract with Spanish in 1905 for the Bergmann-Mars (aka Model No. 6 or No. 6a), and had contracted with Schilling of Shul to actually do the production run.
As a result, production of the Mars was licensed to Anciens Establissement Pieper of Liege in Belgium in 1907.

Spain's Destroyer: a teensy-weensy Mauser Guns Magazine - Find Articles
The 9mm Bergmann cartridge, also known as the 9mm Bergmann-Bayard, 9mm Bayard and 9mm Largo, was Spain's preeminent military and police pistol and submachine gun cartridge for most of the 20th century.
The 9mm Bergmann was chambered in handgun models like the 1908 Bergmann-Bayard, 1913 Campo Giro, 1921 Astra Model 400, and 1911-type clones by Star and Llama as well as the Star Models Z-45 and Z-62, Parinco Model 3R, and the A.S.A.S.A. Model 1953 submachine guns.
Having a short, light, accurate little carbine chambered for the same cartridge and possibly using the same magazine as your service pistol, must have been comforting to the local gendarmerie.

Steyr-Hahn ammo is not any more difficult to find or expensive than Bergmann Bayard or Largo of equal quality.
Most of the Steyr-Hahn ammo is quality, non-corrosive ammo, even the 1930's surplus from RWS and GECO and DWM which is usually as good as the day it was manufactured.

This weapon was designed in 1932 by Bergmann und Müller, the prototypes being made as MK32 by Schultz and Larsen in Denmark.
It is very similar to the Schmeisser design earlier made by Theodor Bergmann of Gaggenau (the MP18), the main external difference being the horizontal magazine, which is inserted from the right side (as opposed to the more familiar left side).

The modern 9x23 Winchester has a thicker case web for this hotter cartridge.
