Berkeley County was created by an act of the House of Burgesses in February 1772 from the northern third of Frederick County (Virginia).
Berkeley County was of strategic importance to both the North and the South during the American Civil War (1861 to 1865).
Berkeley County remained in the Confederacy throughout the Civil War, and was not part of the formation of the State of Kanawha, renamed West Virginia, when it was admitted to the Union with 48 former Virginia counties on January 1, 1863.

Built in the eighteenth century, the Berkeley County Court House at 100 West King Street was used as a prison during the Civil War for Confederate spy Belle Boyd and still has some of the original pressed tin ceilings, lighting fixtures, iron vaults and hardware.
Two miles west of Bunker Hill on Route 26 is the Morgan Cabin that was built in 1731-34 and was once the home of Morgan Morgan the first white settler of West Virginia.
Berkeley County is also part of the George Washington Heritage Trail, the one hundred and twelve driving tour that spirals its way through the Eastern Panhandle and young Washington surveyed many of these areas.

The West Virginia statehood process can be seen as a contract between the leadership of the Trans-Allegheny Virginia counties and the federal government of Abraham Lincoln.
The Richmond governments (of Virginia and the Confederate States) held on to the southwestern counties, which gave them a strategic corridor into Tennessee and points south, and heavy fighting in the southwest allowed the South to secure considerable Salt and Lead mines, this area was not lost to West Virginia.
Virginia was settled from the Chesapeake Bay, of course, and Virginians moved inland along the James River, the York, the Rappahannock and the Potomac.

Berkeley County was of strategic importance to both the North and the South during the Civil War (1861-1865).
Brooke County was named in honor of Robert Brooke (1751-1799), who was educated at the University of Edinburgh, practiced law in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, served in the Virginia General Assembly in 1794 and, later that year, was elected the third Governor of Virginia (1794-1796) by the General Assembly.
The county's economy become stagnant during the Civil War, and the burning of Guyandotte, one of the county's major population centers, was a major blow to the local economy.

Martinsburg, the county seat, was chartered by an act of the Virginia General Assembly in October 1788 on the lands of General Adam Stephen who commanded 500 troops mustered from Berkeley County during Lord Dunmore's War against the Indians in 1774.
In 1790, Berkeley County had, by far, the largest population of the nine counties in existence within the present boundaries of West Virginia.

We are approximatly 65 miles northwest of Washington, DC, and just west of Baltimore MD.We are fortunate that in less than 30 minutes from here you can be in 3 different states.
Now if you want to take most part of the day with a lot of twisties, go through Berkeley Springs at the Second stop light from the center of town, turn left at the light onto Rt.9 W again.
