The Berkeley Square Thing by T. Slemen
Long before Mayfair's Berkeley Square was synonymous with nightingales (thanks to Eric Maschwitz's song), the place was invariably associated with a rather nasty ghost that was alleged to inhabit number 50, a four-storey townhouse that dated back to the 1740s.
Price scoured periodicals and newspapers from the mid 18th century onwards for a reference to the ghost of Berkeley Square, and discovered that in the 1790s, a gang of counterfeiters and coin-clippers had used number 50 as their headquarters.
In 1840, several neighbours of number 50 Berkeley Square heard a medley of strange sounds emanating from the haunted house; bumps on the stairs, dragging noises as if heavy objects were being moved around, jangling of signal bells below the stairs, and the tramping of footsteps.

Leon Edel, one of few to note Berkeley Square's Jamesian source, wrote in 1984 that Leslie Howard's performance in the leading role of Peter Standish-which received an Oscar nomination in 1933-was a thing of "lasting beauty" (II:23).
Berkeley Square (both play and film) did temporarily experience a good deal of "class" popularity-as a literate and romantic fantasy costume drama-but not, on its face, as a James adaptation.

Berkeley Square, laid out in the 1730's by Edward Cock and Francis Hillyard, was at first developed only on the east and west sides since the sales agreement stipulated that the view from Berkeley House across the gardens of Landsdowne House to Berkeley Square's new central garden not be blocked with buildings.
The thirty some plane maple trees in Berkeley Square's garden, planted by square resident Edward Bouverie in 1789, are said to be among the oldest of their type in Mayfair.
