		While this period of Berkner's career was dominated by the creation of a new style of ionospheric sounding equipment, and while this type of equipment became of great practical importance for radio communications, his personal objective in the endeavor was to further the science of geophysics...
		Berkner's greatest contribution to international science was his suggestion (in April 1950 at a party at Van Allen's home in honor of Sidney Chapman) that a third International Polar Year should be arranged twenty-five years after the second, instead of after the customary fifty years.

		Berkner became a member of the Academy in 1948 and was involved in its affairs until his death in 1967.

		An Australian adventurer is proposing to conduct a solo trek from the coast of Berkner Island to the South Geographic Pole (SGP) in November-December this year.
		Five of the 27 who reached the Pole from Berkner Island went on to complete full crossings of the Antarctic continent, while another six tried but had to abandon their attempts after passing the Pole.
		UK adventurer Ranulph Fiennes started from Berkner Island with a massive 227 kg sledge the day before Kaminski, but was forced to end his journey 600 km short of the Pole when he became ill.

	Shackleton's Antarctic Adventure
		The most southern islands, the Antarctic coastal islands such as Berkner Island and Ross Island, are mainly ice-covered and influenced by the cold, dry air flowing down off the Antarctic continent.
		Moving further north, the maritime islands, such as Elephant Island and Bouvetøya, are influenced by the maritime climate of the Southern Ocean and can be surrounded by pack ice in winter, as Sir Ernest Shackleton found out in his attempts to rescue the men on Elephant Island.
		It is the elephant and fur seal populations of the subantarctic islands that first attracted human explorers to the area.

		The records show seasonal dependency of the amount of accumulation with a maximum in winter in the coastal and escarpment region of DML and in summer on Berkner Island and on the plateau.
		The seasonal cycles are significant on Berkner Island, and the coastal area and part of the escarpment region.

		A 181 m long ice core was drilled at 79° 36’ 51" S, 45° 43’ 28" W, near the summit of Berkner Island, Antarctica 886 m a.s.l.).
		Berkner Island is located within the Filchner and Ronne Ice Shelves, and the ice near the summit shows little lateral flow.
		The density of the ice core was measured every 3 mm along ist length, using attenuation of a gamma-ray beam, which gave an absolute accuracy of 2%.

		Two medium depth ice cores were retrieved from Berkner Island by a joint project between the Alfred-Wegener-Institut and the British Antarctic Survey in the 1994/95 field season.
		A 151m deep core from the northern dome (Reinwarthhöhe) of Berkner Island spans 700 years, while a 181m deep core from the southern dome (Thyssenhöhe) spans approximately 1200 years.
		In addition, a full suite of major chemistry measurements is available to define the history in aerosol deposition at these sites: again, there is little evidence that the chemistry of the sites has changed over the past six centuries.

	EXPEDITION NEWS - NOVEMBER 1996
		The explorer will set off from sea level on Berkner Island in the Weddell Sea, traveling across the deeply crevassed Filchner ice shelf towards the mainland at the base of the Argentina Range.
		He is expected to meet up with Fiennes and Polish explorer Marek Kaminski (see related story) at the starting point on Berkner Island.
		Kaminski's own claim to fame was becoming the first man to reach both the North and South Poles on foot and in the same year.

		Successful depot laying for ice core drilling on Berkner Island
		The successful pooling of resources of BAS and the Royal Navy has resulted in 1999-2000 in the deployment of a large depot of fuel, boxes and drilling fluids to an ice-core drilling site on the southern summit of Berkner Island (Thyssenhöhe, 79°34'S, 45°42'W).
		Two Lynx helicopters from HMS Endurance were used to ferry 740 200-litre drums and other supplies ashore from RRS Ernest Shackleton to "Bedlam" Depot on the Luitpold Coast at 77E°10'S, 32°36'W. From the depot, the BAS fleet of Twin Otter aircraft took five drums at a time inland to Thyssenhöhe.
