Alexanderplatz - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Alexanderplatz is a large open square and public transport hub in central Berlin, near the Spree river and the Berliner Dom.
Its heyday was in the 1920s, when together with Potsdamer Platz it was at the heart of Berlin's nightlife, inspiring the 1929 novel Berlin Alexanderplatz.
The Alexanderplatz has been subject to redevelopment several times in its history, most recently during the 1960s, when it was enlarged as part of the German Democratic Republic's redevelopment of the city centre.

II Journal: Berlin Alexanderplatz: ideologies of design and planning and the fate of public space
The proposal for Alexanderplatz in Berlin, which reflects my commitment to a new idea of urban design, is neither a capitulation to the erasure of history nor the temptation to repeat history once again.
Berlin has always had the idea that if a house can be removed, the direction or course of a street can also be changed.
The radical feature of my idea in view of Berlin politics is to advocate the acceptance of the existence of these vast housing estates, and to accept the fact that people live there, that their lives have to be bettered, and that these lives have a memory of at least two generations.

Berlin Alexanderplatz is about one Franz Biberkopf (literally "Beaverhead"), an almost painfully average human being, not too good-looking, not too ugly, just right to be tortured, but left alive, in 1920s agonizing Germany, about his release from prison and why he'd rather go back in instead of dealing with life.
Fassbinder's "Berlin Alexanderplatz" resurrects the enigmatic Alexanderplatz by painting a brilliant yet distressing picture of life in Berlin during the turbulent period between the two world wars.
In a way, Berlin Alexanderplatz is a horror film, in which the horror lies in the depravity of the characters, and in the dark, brooding society in which they find themselves.

Peter Jelavich examines Alfred Döblin's Berlin Alexanderplatz (1929), a novel that questioned the autonomy and coherence of the human personality in the modern metropolis, and traces the radical discrepancies that came with its adaptation into a radio play (1930) and a film (1931).
Jelavich explains these discrepancies by examining not only the varying demands of genre and technology but also the political and economic contexts of the media--in particular, the censorship practices in German radio and film.
Peter Jelavich, Professor of History at Johns Hopkins University, is author of Berlin Cabaret (1993) and Munich and Theatrical Modernism: Politics, Playwriting, and Performance, 1890-1914 (1985).
