  Katherine's Papers- Berlin Diaries
Berlin Diaries by Marie Vassiltchikov is a primary historical source that should be included in any study of the Second World War.
The diary tells of the near assassination of Adolf Hitler, describes the all-encompassing character of the war, and helps the reader to understand the Holocaust in the time frame that it occurred.
The format of a diary works well with these topics, and the author's uncommon station in life gives her writings a fresh point of view that has a significant historical value.

When Judy Bellingham approached me in 1991 to write a song cycle for her, I immediately wanted to set extracts from the 'Berlin Diary', to capture these layers of dramatic historical irony along with the essence of a marvellous text.
In reality I was able to only set a fraction of the diary to music, and hence the title of my work - 'Berlin Fragments' (which I would also like to think suggests the breaking of the Berlin wall into bits).
I don't pretend to have matched the emotional depth and subtlety of Cilla's 'Berlin Diary', but I hope that my piece offers a personal response to the images and ideas of the text.

William Shirer's book, Berlin Diary, is an excellent insight into the rise of Naziism before the Second World War.
Nevertheless, I just read the 1940 1st edition of Berlin Diary and he certainly gives the reader a "you are there" feeling.
As you will see, this is Shirer's personal diary, in which he speaks lovingly about his wife and newborn and worries about their safety in Switzerland.

 Revelations from Joseph Goebbels' Diary
Goebbels' diary didn't start in 1933 when the Nazis come to power; it started when he was a student at Heidelberg University, and carries on all the way until a few days before he commits suicide in 1945 with his family in Hitler's bunker.
Very early on in his diary, he's talking about how Else came 'round, and she was all his: "She was all over me." It's an imprecise phrase, but you're willing to believe, given his reputation, that this could only mean one thing.
When Goebbels arrived in Berlin as Gauleiter in 1926, he was confronted by a city with 179,000 Jews, one third of all Jews in Germany, and he made use of this fact.

The book, Eine Frau in Berlin (A Woman in Berlin), is a collection of diary entries by an anonymous woman in her early 30s who narrates the events of her life in the last years of World War II and the first postwar years in bombed-out Berlin.
It is easy to imagine that the content of this diary of postwar society was too frank, too extreme, and too unsentimental for readers, in the face of the atmosphere of collective silence about the past and the determinedly stoic look-forward-not-back attitude pervasive during reconstruction.
We have the diaries of Anne Frank and Victor Klemperer and the observations of Sebastian Haffner.
