At regular concerts in Berlin, where it has been the center of the city's cultural life for over 100 years, as well as in the major venues across the world, the orchestra never fails to astonish listeners with its high standards of execution and musicianship.
The Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in 1882 by some fifty ambitious musicians who decided to break from the main orchestra of the town, run by the autocratic and parsimonious Benjamin Bilse.

During his tenure in Berlin, Ohnesorg was largely responsible for the orchestra's successful change of legal status from a governmental entity into a private foundation, a change aimed at freeing the organization from weighty bureaucracy and improving its long-term financial prospects.
A falling-out between Ohnesorg and the Berliner Festwochen meant that the Berlin Philharmonic was not part of the city's main music festival for the first time since its inception.
Meanwhile, Philharmonic staff members were rumored to be unhappy about the inclusion in Ohnesorg's contract of a clause allowing him a significant personal cut of any sponsoring money which he won for the orchestra.

The Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra is on stage, awaiting its cue.
The Berlin Philharmonic is fully controlled and its ensemble perfectly together, and yet the tempo is so unstable and dynamically alive that no note falls quite where its predecessors would suggest, as if to reflect the entire orchestra's heaving, nervous desperation.
After taking the helm of the Berlin Philharmonic upon Furtwängler's death, Herbert von Karajan won unprecedented fame and fortune by polishing his performances to a superhuman precision, purging the music of any vestige of human emotion, as if to deliberately suppress memories of the approach of his predecessor.

Strauß often performed concerts in the city and even premièred works there, including the polka ‘Pigeons of St. Mark’s’ and the ‘Emperor Waltz’, written to celebrate the alliance between the emperors Franz Joseph and Wilhelm that is often considered to be amongst the finest of Strauß compositions.
