Welcome to the official site of Waltraud Meier
Her close artistic collaboration with Maestro Barenboim and the Berlin State Opera Unter den Linden, as well as with the Bavarian State Opera in Munich has taken the singer on regular tours with those companies to Japan, where she has been seen and heard in Die Walküre, Wozzeck, Tristan und Isolde and Fidelio.
In 2001 at the opening of the Munich Opera Festival, the singer then made her brilliant début in the role of Didon in Hector Berlioz's Les Troyens with Zubin Mehta in the pit.
This is why she decided to consecrate the 2003/2004 season exclusively to her activities as recitalist and concert singer.

The State Opera had just lost their conductor, Leo Blech, to a rival opera house, and negotiations with better-known conductors such as Otto Klemperer, Bruno Walter, and Alexander von Zemlinsky had broken down.
The very first live recording was an operetta excerpt from Berlin in 1932, but the bulk of his live recordings are airchecks of radio broadcasts from Uruguay's state radio, broadcasts from the Teatro Colón, the NBC Symphony radio broadcasts, and postwar broadcasts from French and German state radio companies.
The Vienna State Opera Orchestra (better known as the Vienna Philharmonic) is in top form -- the overture to Figaro is one of the fleetest, briskest performances I've ever heard, yet never sounds rushed, and the orchestra seems ready to burst out of the pit for the sheer joy of the playing.

Despite the opera's medieval setting, its central theme of an artist's duty to constructively embrace social issues was painfully modern, and the Nazis surely grasped its challenging parallels with current history – perhaps the very reason why Furtwängler resolved to champion a work that spoke so directly to his own gnawing concerns.
The Berlin Philharmonic is fully controlled and its ensemble perfectly together, and yet the tempo is so unstable and dynamically alive that no note falls quite where its predecessors would suggest, as if to reflect the entire orchestra's heaving, nervous desperation.
A 1942 Berlin concert (on DGG 427 781-2) is impulsive and overtly dramatic, a 1951 Vienna studio reading (on DGG 427 405-2) is lyric and gentle, a 1952 Vienna concert (on Virtuoso 2697362) boasts breathtakingly smooth transitions, and a 1953 Berlin concert (on Music and Arts CD-795) is massive and noble.
