XENOPHILIA (The Band) - The Official Web Site!
Pierce, Smith, Maugel, and Clark conclude that the Octopus giganteus carcass is whale blubber and that the Bermuda blob is the skin of some fish, possibly a shark.
(For example, collagen from squids is 9.6% proline, while collagen from humans is 12.8% proline.) The proportions of various amino acids in the Bermuda Blob are characteristic of ectothermic (cold-blooded) vertebrate collagen.
Even for the short time that the Bermuda Blob had been in preservatives, its composition could also have been changed.

CNN.com - Chilean scientists work to ID mysterious sea creature - Jul. 2, 2003
While the animal found off the coast of Florida was never officially classified, he said, a similar mound of flesh found in 1988 on a Bermuda beach was tested.
The formaldehyde solution the Chilean researchers are using to preserve part of the animal would destroy a lab's ability to test its DNA, he said.
The animal, which was discovered June 23 washed up on a Chilean beach, was described as a 40-foot-long (12-meter) mass of rotting grey flesh that scientists estimated to weigh about 13 tons.

 Scientists Solve Chilean 'Blob' Mystery
Similar, documented blobs, often thought to be the remains of giant squids, had turned up on beaches elsewhere, including one in St. Augustine, Fla. in 1896, two in Bermuda (1995 and 1997), in Tasmania in 1960 and Nantucket, Mass.
The Chilean blobs DNA matched that of the Nantucket blob exactly and had all the characteristics of all the other blobs that used to be whales.
All the blobs looked pretty much the same, says Skip Pierce, professor of biology at the University of South Florida who is presenting the results of his blob bio-sleuthing today at the 2004 Annual Meeting of the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology in New Orleans (www.sicb.org).

The so-called "Giant Octopus of St. Augustine" from 1896, the "Tasmanian West Coast Monster" of 1960, and three blobs that were found in Bermuda and Nantucket in the 1990s also turned out to be washed-up whale remains.
"These results unequivocally demonstrate that the Chilean blob is the almost completely decomposed remains of the blubber layer of a sperm whale," the team wrote in the June issue of The Biological Bulletin.
The 12-metre gelatinous blob washed ashore at Los Muermos about 1,000 kilometres south of Santiago in July 2003.

Chilean 'Blob' May Be Giant Octopus, Whale Blubber
Other informal sightings of similar deep-sea creatures by fishermen and divers from the Bahamas to Tasmania are the stuff of folklore on the "Bermuda Blob" as well as academic study.

Photographs of the carcass showed a pinkish-gray blob on the beach resembling a squashed elephant.

In the infinitely gray landscape of Europe, Silvio Berlusconi, Italy's prime minister, is a blob of color and energy.
The Italian press customarily refers to these two political and personal rivals as "the odd couple." A self-made man, Berlusconi has an ex-film-star wife, a mansion outside Milan, a house in Bermuda, a yacht, and the multi-billion-dollar business empire he has created.
Besides their EU titles of president, what they have in common is that both have faced corruption charges in Italy, and so far gotten away with it.

While the animal found off the coast of Florida was never officially classified, he said, a similar mound of flesh found in 1988 on a Bermuda beach was tested.
But Mead, who has studied whales since 1965, said he believes the blob found in Chile is a massive chunk of whale.
A specimen of that octopus was believed to have washed up on the Florida Coast in 1896, but samples of the animal's skin were lost and its species was never confirmed, said Dr. James Mead, a zoologist at the Smithsonian Institution where pictures of the specimen are stored.
