The fact remains that one of the very few surviving plans of a Bermuda type single mast sloop (Bermuda sloops were related to and apparently derived from the earlier Jamaica sloop), that of the Virginia built Mediator from 1741, clearly shows seven gunports to a side (for a total of 14 gunports, of course).
This sloop had a length on deck of 61 feet, 4 inches, keel length for tonnage of 44 feet, breadth inside the planking at deck level 20 feet 11 inches, depth of hold 9 feet 9 inches, and a tonnage of 105 tons.
Actually, single masted sloops DID get to over 80 or even 100 feet long and were know to have over 16 guns, but they were rare and sometimes troublesome to handle, especially for the time when shipbuilding matierials were relaively crude.

I read somewhere that schooners used to rake their masts so to have the booms raised while sailing on reaches and having the sails eased - thus not dragging the booms in the water.
But with the Sprit of Bermuda there is only one boom on the aft mast, so maybe there is another explanation - other than it looks cool.
