		Bern was founded during the winter of 1886-87 on the newly-built Rock Island branch of the Chicago, Kansas, and Nebraska railway.
		Other suggestions were made, including "Bern" (in honor of the capital city of Switzerland), "Bassel" (a Swiss city north of Berne, Switzerland), and "Streit" (in honor of a pioneer family that had settled in the area).
		Col. Baker agreed that "Bern" would be a suitable name for the town and used it on the town plat he filed at the Nemaha County courthouse on March 3, 1887.
