Bernard Butler: Friends and Lovers ---Ink Blot Magazine
Even though they were considered by many to be the best band in England, Bernard Butler left modern Brit-pop revolutionaries Suede at the height of their power in 1994 to pursue a solo career.
On his own, Butler shifted between session work - playing on albums by Aimee Mann and James' Tim Booth, a duo with David McAlmont in 1995, and a brief stint with the Verve in 1997, eventually settling into a recording career as a solo singer-songwriter on Creation Records.
Bernard is sensitive, he's kind and honest and he's really learned to open up about his feelings and needs.

Bernard's recently started to relent from his stout refusal to talk to the press or perform inane promotional chores, and has thus shed his grumpy, head-up-own-arse muso tag.
Whenever Bernard comes back with a new record, he's sounding different - never standing still, he's somehow missed out on the credit he deserves for making such impossibly varied records as Animal Nitrate, The Wild Ones, Yes and Stay.
This time around the order of the day is loud, widescreen rock, an extension of the instinct first explored on You Just Know which, fittingly, is one of the handful of tracks from People Move On played today.

Bernard Butler: Friends and Lovers - PopMatters Music Review
Bernard Butler is unquestionably one of the finest guitarists in British rock and it's safe to say his old band Suede has never been the same without him.
Butler may have left his old band behind, but he's still a Britpop kinda guy, and his deeply expressive guitar work is still his calling card.
Butler is one of the guitar heroes of his generation, but unlike the other one John Squire (Stone Roses), he's not trapped within his own legend.

The long-awaited introduction of Butler to the music world as a singer/songwriter is at once slightly tentative and quite promising.
Personal Butler hero Edwyn Collins takes a turn on backing vocals himself for "Hotel Splendide," which has a great keyboard line and a crisp '60s pop-with-fuzz tinge.
Butler's singing is noticeably more full-bodied here, while his guitar pyrotechnics at the end are quite good.

So it comes as no surprise that the lofty sense of drama and atmosphere that was so much an element of Butler's old outfit is in large supply here.
People Move On is loaded with Butler's spacy guitar weaving hazy, languorous soundscapes around a ride cymbal à la the Verve while his crushed-velvet, guitar-hero flash splits the difference between Stone Roses/Seahorses axman John Squire and the quietly adoring side of Billy Corgan.
When Butler closes the disc with a listless "I'm tired, I've got no more to say," it's far too easy to believe him.

Soon after his departure from Suede, where he had been lead guitarist, Bernard Butler made it clear that, though he was finished with glam revival, he had no intention of abandoning the '70s influence he had helped to engender in his former band.
FRIENDS AND LOVERS, his second solo album, maintains that stance, exploring some of the same territory as people like Al Stewart (on "I'd Do It Again If I Could") and Jackson Browne (on "No Easy Way Out"), albeit with a distinctly late-'90s vibe.
On "Smile," a simple acoustic guitar, augmented by synthesizer washes and crow calls, gives way to slow, pounding drums and a sonic density that recalls the spectacular swells of bands like Spiritualized and the Verve.
