Bernard Courtois Biography | World of Chemistry
Courtois was admitted to the famous engineering school in Paris, the École Polytechnique, where he studied under the chemist Antoine François, Comte de Fourcroy.
In late 1811 Courtois apparently used too much acid and observed clouds of violet vapor, which had an irritating odor similar to that of chlorine and condensed on cold surfaces, to form dark, almost fl, lustrous crystals with a metallic sheen.
Courtois was acknowledged as the discoverer of iodine, which was widely used in the treatment of goiter, and in 1831 the Dijon Academy awarded him the Montyon prize of 6,000 francs "for having improved the art of healing."

Iodine - Properties, Courtois Discovers Iodine, Curing Goiters
Courtois was barely making a living in his family's business of manufacturing saltpeter, which was used to make gunpowder.
Although Courtois investigated the properties of the new substance by combining it with several other elements, he did not have enough time or money to follow through on his discovery.
In 1814 J. Colin made an important discovery in microanalytical chemistry when he showed that iodine reacted with starch to produce a blue color so bright that iodine could be detected in amounts as low as one part in 400,000.

 Elements Named for Color
Iodine was discovered by Bernard Courtois (1777-1838) who learned the manufacture of saltpeter from his father.
In 1811 Courtois accidentally added excess sulfuric acid resulting in a violet vapor cloud that condensed on colder objects forming dark, lustrous crystals.
Courtois suspected it was a new element and began production and sales, but turned over further investigation to his friends Charles-Bernard Desormes and Nicolas Clement who announced the discovery in 1813.

 The History of Iodine
In 1811 when Bernard Courtois (1777-1838) discovered iodine, he was not searching for a way to heal his fellow humans.
However, in the process of making saltpeter, excess sulfur compounds were created, forcing them to add sulfuric acid to the mixture to clean the compounds from their vats.
He performed a few minor experiments with this new substance and noted that it combined well with phosphorous, hydrogen, and a few metals, but did not combine easily with oxygen or carbon.
