Bernard Kipchirchir Lagat (born December 12, 1974 in Kapsabet, Kenya) is a middle and long distance athlete.
Lagat attended Washington State University, as had previous athletic greats Henry Rono and Mike Kosgei, from where he graduated in 2000 in management information systems.
The U.S. does allow dual citizenship and consequently races run by Lagat after May 7th could have been ratified as American records since USATF rules only state that an athlete has to be a U.S. citizen competing in a sanctioned competition to be eligible to set a national record.

The problem with Bernard Lagat, from what I understand, is that he was an American citizen for the last few years, but hid his status so that he could compete for Kenya at the 2004 Olympics.
Lagat was an immigrant, and apparently he likes the United States more.
Bernard Lagat shouldn't necessarily be considered a patriotic, flag-hugging American, but he should at least be looked at as a positive representation of the United States.
