Lord was raised in a bilingual household in Moncton, New Brunswick.
Lord was again courted for federal politics in late 2003 when the PC Party of Canada and the Canadian Alliance merged into the Conservative Party of Canada.

On October 18, 1997, at the age of 32, Bernard Lord was elected leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of New Brunswick at the largest political convention in the province's history.
On June 7, 1999, Bernard Lord led his party to the greatest Progressive Conservative victory in New Brunswick history, sweeping 44 of the province's 55 seats and becoming, at the age of 33, the province's youngest elected premier.
Bernard Lord has been recognized by many as a person of vision and leadership and was chosen as one of Time magazine's top 25 New Generation of Leaders in Canada.
