Bernard Moitessier Bio - NEWSLETTER   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
An internationally renowned sailor, writer, and ecologist, Bernard Moitessier was one of the true legends of the twentieth century.
He first became famous for his daring sailing exploits, which he documented in Sailing to the Reefs, Cape Horn: The Logical Route (to be reprinted in the spring of 2003 by Sheridan House), The Long Way, and Tamata and the Alliance.
Moitessier, well in the lead and with only a short distance to the finish line, had victory in hand, but at the last minute he suddenly turned away and disappeared over the horizon.

Waiting for Moitessier would be the cash prize of $25,000, the trophy, and the inevitable storm of noto- riety, adulation, and perhaps a million dollars in books, endorse- ments, public appearances, emoluments of all kinds to say nothing of the nationalistic pride of beating the English at their own game, and winning the Legion d'honneur.
Moitessier changed course, headed eastward along the Roaring Forties (after having already crossed his outbound track) on a second nonstop circumnavigation, automatically dropping out of the Times race.
Bernard met the legendary William Robinson and was invited aboard Varua, where Robbie gave a graphic account of his fight with the survival storm near Cape Horn.

Moitessier entered the Round The World Race presumably to win, but he spends far more time communing with the seabirds and listening to the wave patterns on his boat, JOSHUA's hull than in dedicated yacht racing.
If indeed Moitessier went mad (as some say he did) his madness was a doorway to spiritual peace, and not, like Crowhurst's, to sorrow and death.
