Bernard Punsley, also known as Bernard Punsly (July 11, 1923–January 20, 2004), was an American actor who left show business to become a physician.
Punsley auditioned for a part in the play Dead End in 1937 because he though it might be fun.
Punsley played the parts of "Milt" and later "Ape." He appeared on the silver screen with actors such as Ronald Reagan, James Cagney, Pat O'Brien, John Garfield, and Humphrey Bogart.

Sometime during the original run, Duncan was replaced in the role of Spit by his understudy, Leo B. Gorcey, who went on to achieve fame as the resident weasel and wise guy.
As of 1999, Huntz Hall and Bernard Punsly were the last surviving members of The Dead End Kids.
Huntz Hall died in 1999 and Bernard Punsly died in 2004.

Bernard Punsley auditioned for the 1937 play "Dead End"; on a lark - he had absolutely no show-business experience whatsoever, had never studied acting and had no desire to be an actor.
Punsley left the series in the mid-40s to join the army, where he received his medical training.
In February 1994, Bernard appeared with fellow ex-Dead End Kid Huntz Hall at a ceremony in which the gang received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

They were then imported en masse to Hollywood by William Wyler in 1937 when he filmed the play, and proved to be so popular that they remained as a more or less viable entity until their final film (as the Bowery Boys) in 1958.
The group added the term dead end kid to the language as it came to refer to any group of troublesome, boisterous youth, and became forever typecast in their roles, which may have led to the numerous problems and run-ins they subsequently had over the years with the authorities.
Bernard Punsly was the last member of the Dead End kids who left to become a doctor in the United States Army.

The quality of the films declined until Warner's threw in the towel and the Kids were reborn as the East Side Kids at the king of the poverty row studios, Monogram.
Despite the fact that they played the same basic roles in every picture, their characters were given different names in many of the films, although Billy Halop was always the leader and featured "Kid" in these movies.
Bernard Punsley went on to become a doctor after leaving the series.

Bernard Punsly, the last surviving member of the quintet of young Broadway and Hollywood actors known as "The Dead End Kids," died in Torrence, California, on Jan. 20, the New York Times reported.
Punsley found his most lasting public identity at the age of 12, when he was cast as Milton, one of the gang of streetwise slum kids at the center of Sidney Kingsley's 1935 social drama Dead End.

There were six kids in this group (and at this time, they were kids, the boys were in their early to late teens): Leo Gorcey, Huntz Hall, Billy Halop, Gabriel Dell, Bobby Jordan, and Bernard Punsley.
Due to popular demand, the group was split, first into the Little Tough Guys (Hall, Halop, Dell, and Punsley).
Unfortunately, in 1956, Bernard was in a car accident and died, which caused Leo to imbibe even more than he already did.

Goldwyn sold their contracts to Warner Bros., reportedly because the youngsters — all teens except 20-year-old Gorcey — were a handful, and he didn't want the aggravation of dealing with them.
Halop died in 1976 at the age of 56, and Dell died in 1988, aged 68.
Hall and Punsley lasted the longest: Hall, 79, went in 1999, and Punsley hung on until 2004, dying at the age of 90.
