 Saints' Biographies -- S
Saint Samson was educated and ordained priest at the monastic school founded by Saint Illtyd at Llanilltyd Fawr (Llantwit Major) in South Wales.
Saint Bernard once brought him a tunic and pair of shoes, which Schetzelon tried on to please the monk, but he soon discarded them saying that he did not need them.
Senan is one of many Irish saints of this name; he was one of the huge number of saints in the upsurge of the sixth-century Celtic church, and was a contemporary of Saint David, whom he is supposed to have visited.

Samson et Delila - Camille Saint-Saëns
Samson et Dalila, Saint-Saëns' only opera to remain in the active repertory, doesn't get a lot of respect.
Samson et Dalila is revived, more often than not, to showcase a mezzo-soprano, since the mezzo gets all the great arias.
Samson (Sergei Larin) is at the same time both irresistibly tempted and wretchedly conflicted ("Lord, have pity on my weakness!").

Deighton to write a final Bernard Samson work.
Looking at Bernard Samson and his family, friends, enemies and detractors has made for an extremely interesting read: I believe that I read all nine in about a month and a half.
From the first sentence in "Berlin Match" to the last paragraph of "Charity", Len Deighton has created a masterpiece of intrigue, double-dealing and the cloak and dagger mentality that is peculiar to the British Secret Service.

 Review: Goldeneye
Even given that we're in a reality where spies are more like Superman than Bernard Samson (Len Deighton's popular MI6 agent), suspension of disbelief occasionally becomes a challenge, especially with visual effects that could be charitably called "subpar." Some such liabilities, however, can be forgiven in the name of fun.
The Russian mafia obtains a space- based weapons system called Goldeneye that works by exploding a nuclear device in orbit, then crippling a ground location with the resulting electromagnetic pulse.
Despite the mostly-cosmetic alterations, the majority of fans won't be disappointed by Pierce Brosnan's debut as their favorite spy.

Pope Eugene III, on 22 March, 1148, opened at reims a council at which St. Bernard forced Gilbert de La Porrée to retract his errors on the essence of God, and Samson de Mauvoisin, Archbishop of Reims, caused Eon de l'Etoile to be condemned.
In 816 Louis the Debonnaire was crowned by Stephen V in the cathedral of Reims, and the pope conferred the title of Augusta on Queen Ermengarde.
Pope Leo IX came to Reims in September, 1049, during the episcopate of Guy de Chatillion; he consecrated the church of St. Remigius, and decreed that thenceforward the feast of that saint should be kept of the first day of October, throughout the whole kingdom.

Thibaudet plays Ravel; Stravinsky's Firebird - Philharmonia Orchestra
For a goodly collection of Ravel, including Valses, in fine performances, both Ernest Ansermet [DECCA 468 564-2] and Bernard Haitink [PHILIPS 438 745-2], both twofers, offer music-making of a high order.
Despite many fine Ravel concertos out there, not least Zimerman and Boulez [DG 449 213-2, including Boulez conducting Valses], I still feel that Samson Francois holds his own in both the G major and Left-hand concertos; outstanding renditions with Andre Cluytens conducting [EMI 5669052].
But, like the Valses nobles et sentimentales which opens this evening's programme, it is also both profound and full of drama, particularly in the exquisite central slow movement, where the piano and cor anglais indulge in a rapturous extended duet.
