  Saint Bernard - LoveToKnow 1911
Bernard's resolution to become a monk was not, however, shaken, and when he at last definitely decided to join the community which Robert of Molesmes had founded at Citeaux in 1198, he carried with him his brothers and many of his relations and friends.
In northern Italy the effect of his personality and of his preaching was immense; Milan itself, of all the Lombard cities most jealous of the imperial claims, surrendered to his eloquence, submitted to Lothair and to Innocent, and tried to force Bernard against his will into the vacant see of St Ambrose.
Bernard's crowning triumph in the long contest was the abdication of the new antipope, the result of his personal influence.

 St. Bernard of Clairvaux
Bernard, Abbot of Clairvaux one of the most illustrious preachers and monks of the middle ages, was born at Fontaines, near Dijon, in France.
The lamentable outcome of the movement was a hard blow to Bernard, who found it difficult to understand this manifestation of the hidden counsels of God, but ascribed it to the sins of the crusaders.
Bernard had in March and April 1148 accompanied the pope to the council of Reims, where he led the attack on certain propositions of the scholastic theologian Gilbert de la Porrée.

Bernard, third son of a Burgundian nobleman, was born in 1090.

Bernard, an 11th Century Augustinian priest established a monastery and traveler’s way-station at one of the highest summits inhabited year-round in Europe.
Bernard is best known for his love and care of pilgrims and travelers at the Alpine hospice he founded at the top of Europe, and for a breed of large, heavily built dogs used to find travelers lost in the snow and cold who lived at his hospice many years after Bernard.
Bernard’s boyhood tutor, Germain, himself a mountaineer and a scholar, greatly influenced the young Bernard and inspired him with courage, idealism, determination and sensitivity.

Dogs With Jobs   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
It seems most probable that the Saint Bernard is a descendant of the large Mastiff-type dogs that were brought to Helvetia (Switzerland) by Roman armies during the first two centuries A.D. These dogs were widely used in the valley farms and Alpine dairies for a variety of guarding, herding, and drafting duties.
They have also made their mark on the Hollywood showdog scene; famous Saint Bernards include Beethoven, who starred in Beethoven and Beethoven's Second, Dreyfuss, who was on the TV shows Golden Girls and Empty Nest, and if you saw the movie you’d never forget Cujo.
Though Saint Bernards generally need very little training for their work, since generations of service seem to have stamped the rescuing instinct upon their character, they require some obedience training as puppies because of their tremendous size as adults.
