Machado was also briefly President of the Directory of the Democratic Party in 1902, and after switching to the Republican Party, was this party's President of the Directory from 1906 to 1909.
Machado ran again to the Presidency in 1915 and was this time elected President of Portugal.
In 1917 Machado was deposed by a military coup headed by Sidónio Pais and went into exile.

Several dozen lodges and groups moved and found their place under the new jurisdiction, representing one third of the Masonic membership.

On October 13, 1998, Brian Franzen plead guilty to two counts of misdemeanor animal neglect (Penal Code 597f) involving four ponies seized in April 1998 by officials from the City of San Bernardino Animal Control and the Humane Society of San Bernardino Valley.
Franzen has been traveling with the Sterling and Reid Brothers Circus.
