Bernardo Bertolucci - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bernardo Bertolucci (born March 16, 1940) is an Italian writer and film director.
Bernardo Bertolucci directed his first film at the age of 21 (La commare secca, 1962) which was shortly followed by his acclaimed Prima della rivoluzione (Before the Revolution, 1964).
Whether this narrowness is Bertolucci's intent merely a symptom of the narrowness some critics accuse him of, he has used the controversy aroused by his films iconoclastically to encourage people to reconsider themselves and their society; he is often considered successful in pushing back the boundaries of propriety.

Born in Parma, Italy, Bernardo Bertolucci attended Rome University and developed a love of both poetry and cinema early in life thanks to his father, the late poet and film critic Attilio Bertolucci.
Bertolucci began to gain attention in North America in 1970 when he was nominated for an Oscar for Best Screenplay for Il conformista (1970).
However, though Bertolucci received Best Director nominations from the Academy Awards, the Golden Globes and the Directors Guild of America, the film was banned in his homeland and Bertolucci not only received a four-month suspended sentence, but had his civil rights revoked for five years.

 Bernardo Bertolucci
Bertolucci was born to a prosperous family in Parma, Italy.
Its last act, however, sharply divided audiences, with Bertolucci depicting a Red Flag-waving trial of the landowners after the fall of fascism – a purely fantastical scenario that was closer to a Maoist show trial than anything that occurred in Italian history.
Bertolucci, who now split his time between Rome and London with his English wife, Clare Peploe, had entered into a fruitful partnership with the British producer Jeremy Thomas, who was an expert at putting together international financing for ambitious films.

Guardian Unlimited Film | Features | Bernardo Bertolucci: Last Tango in Paris
Bertolucci and Brando have altered the face of an art form.
Last Tango is certainly the film that catapulted Bertolucci towards international fame, the story of a middle-aged man, who, devastated by the apparent suicide of his wife, embarks on a purely sexual sadomasochistic affair with a young girl, who, in the end, kills him.
Maria Schneider, as the girl, was unknown at the time, and Bertolucci, who failed to cast both Dominique Sanda and Catherine Deneuve when they became pregnant, has said he wanted her to be a Lolita but more perverse.

Our hotel talk was only half an hour later, and the Bertolucci I met was an utterly different person-voluble, so, so loose, fielding my questions with an ironic smile on his face, and grabbing the house phone again and again to converse with a seemingly infinite number of well-wishers and compadres.

Los Angeles, in the spring of 1974, was the setting of the first and only meeting between two of cinema's true masters: Bernardo Bertolucci and Jean Renoir, son of the celebrated Impressionist painter Auguste.
Allied planes then accidentally destroyed the original negatives, and it wasn't until 1956, when various pieces of the film were found throughout France, that Renoir (whose canon also includes such subtle masterpieces as La Grande Illusion and Partie de campagne) was able to restore it to its former self.
Bertolucci praises the film's serene conclusion (which he admits to having appropriated wholesale for 1900), Renoir's pioneering use of light, frame and focus, his warm, self-referential presence as a character ("He is the director, and yet he is unable to avoid the tragedy at the end").

This interpretation must be played against Bertolucci’s, which I always took as meaning that life only becomes sweet after the revolution—a belief that accords with both the Marxist sympathies of Fabrizio, the protagonist of the film, and those of Bertolucci himself (he joined the Italian Communist party in 1969, leaving ten years later).

If Bertolucci “meant the title ironically,” then it’s clear that he interpreted Talleyrand’s remark as I originally did: that Talleyrand was a reactionary who yearned for the good old days before the revolution destroyed the aristocratic way of life.
