Florence in the sixteenth Century   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
It is a striking example of Buontalenti's ability to create an abstract and figurative design together with exceptional sensitivity in relation to the material, in all its possibilities from the abstract to the allusive to the organic.
Between the middle of the sixteenth and the beginning of the seventeenth centuries Tribolo, Ammannati, Cellini, Buontalenti, Giambologna and Zuccari created a trend of tastes in wich formal invention was led to allusive obscurity through a transposition of human- feline forms of organic plant, animal or mixed architecturally stylized elements.
Buontalenti's grottoes were one of the most elegant and refined contributions to XVI century architecture in terms of environmental settings.

Buontalenti’s primary contribution is above all in the realm of machinery, which he used to make scenography appear a marvelous but naturalistic and coherent part of the dramatic action.
Buontalenti’s temporary installations also shaped the seminal political events of the Medici dynasty.
In 1589, the prologue’s curtain depicting the city of Rome fell to reveal a series of revolving prisms inspired by Vitruvius’ periaktoi; by these means and through the use of sliding shutters, Buontalenti was able to provide the unprecedented number of seven settings for the intermezzi and the main drama, La Pelligrina.

The first stage was scarcely begun by Niccolo Tribolo before he died in 1550, then was continued by Bartolomeo Ammanati, with contributions in planning from Giorgio Vasari, who laid out grottos, and in sculpture by Bernardo Buontalenti.
The elaborate architecture of the Grotto in the courtyard that separates the palace from its garden is by Buontalenti.
Initially formed by clipped edges and greens, it was later formalized by rebuilding in stone decorated with statues based on Roman myths such as the Fountain of the Ocean sculpted by Giambologna, then transferred to another location within the same garden.

 Zoomedia.it - Bernardo Buontalenti
