Bernardo Houssay - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bernardo Alberto Houssay (April 10, 1887–September 21, 1971) was an Argentinian physiologist who received (with Carl and Gerty Cori) the 1947 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for his discovery of the role played by pituitary hormones in regulating the amount of blood sugar (glucose) in animals.
Houssay’s worked in many fields of physiology, such as the nervous, digestive, respiratory and circulatory systems, but his main contribution, which was recognized by the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine of 1947, was on the experimental investigation of the role of the anterior hypophysis gland in the metabolism of carbohydrates, particularly in diabetes mellitus.
Houssay wrote with them the most influential textbook of Human Physiology in Latin America, in Spanish and Portuguese (the later was translated by Covian and collaborators), which, since 1950 has been published in successive editions and used in almost all medical schools of the continent.

 Bernardo Alberto Houssay
Appointed professor of physiology (1910) and director of the physiological institute (1919) at the University of Buenos Aires, Houssay was one of 150 Argentine educators dismissed from their posts by the 1943 military coup of Gen. Juan Peron.
Working with dogs that had been rendered diabetic by excision of the pancreas (1924-37), Houssay found that removal of the adenohypophysis (the anterior, or frontal, lobe of the pituitary body, located beneath the brain) greatly relieved the symptoms of the disease and made the animal unusually sensitive to insulin.
He demonstrated that injection of pituitary extracts into normal animals induces diabetes by increasing the amount of sugar in the blood, indicating that the secretions of the gland oppose the action of insulin.

Bernardo Alberto Houssay - Nobel Lecture
A permanent diabetes was produced by prolonged treatment with the extract of anterior lobe of hypophysis in dogs with a reduced (Houssay, Biasotti, Di Benedetto, and Rietti, 1932) or an intact pancreas (Young, 1937).
Later, in 1937, it was demonstrated in: (a) dogs with a surgically reduced pancreas (Houssay, Di Benedetto, and Rietti); (b)normal rabbits (Baumann and Marine); (c) normal puppies.
Later the diabetogenic effect was also demonstrated in dogs with a surgically reduced pancreas (Houssay, Biasotti, Di Benedetto, and Rietti, 1932) or with an intact pancreas (Evans et al., 1932, etc.).

Houssay syndrome: Improvement of the diabetic state in patients following pathological disease of the pituitary, causing hypopituitarism, usually due to a vascular or infiltrate cause (tuberculosis or sarcoidosis).
This is the clinical counterpart of the posthypophysectomy remission of diabetes mellitus in pancreatomised animals, observed during experiments by Houssay and Biasotti.
This work led to Houssay's demonstration of the importance of the anterior pituitary in sugar metabolism for which he shared the Nobel Prize in 1947.

Houssay worked with dogs from which the hypophysis, or sometimes only its anterior lobe, was surgically removed.
Its size is that of a bean in man, a pea in the dog, and a radish seed in the large toad Bufo marinus, which is plentiful in the Argentine.
He then found that a daily implantation of anterior lobe of hypophysis from toads on the operated animals protected the latter from unbalanced levels of insulin, otherwise present.
