Guardian | Mafia arrest brings police closer to boss of bosses
Magistrates who have grown old hunting Bernardo Provenzano punched the air in victory yesterday after a midnight raid netted his lieutenant, Vincenzo Virga, one of the 10 most wanted criminals in Italy, in a cottage on the outskirts of Trapani, on western tip of Sicily.
Police believe the real damage to Provenzano is the loss of his liaison with a new generation of mobsters who know him only as a ghost, flitting from safe houses to mountain shacks.
The last known photograph of Provenzano, who was convicted in his absence for the 1992 murder of a judge, was taken in 1959 and shows a heavy-set young man with brilliantined hair, a grave expression and wearing a suit.

Bernardo Provenzano   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Bernardo Provenzano (born January 31, 1933) is a member of the Sicilian Mafia (La Cosa Nostra) and is suspected of being the head of the Corleonesi, a Mafia Family from the village of Corleone, and as such, de facto capo di tutti capi (Boss of Bosses) of the entire Sicilian Mafia.
Provenzano has not been publicly seen since the early 1960s, and when his wife and two grown-up sons came out from hiding in 1992, many suspected that Provenzano was dead, from natural causes or otherwise.
Provenzano has been a fugitive from the law ever since his indictment for murder in 1963 and it is theorized that he has been on the run longer than any other criminal, an unparalleled 42 years as of 2005.

Provenzano is believed to have taken command of the Mafia after the 1993 arrest of "boss of bosses" Salvatore "Toto" Riina, who was among those convicted for ordering the killings of Falcone and Borsellino.
To eliminate any doubt that the DNA was Provenzano's, investigators compared it with a blood sample taken from Provenzano's brother, who was treated at a clinic in the family's town of Corleone, Sicily, La Stampa said.
Analysis indicated that the two samples were "99.87 percent similar," strongly increasing the likelihood that the French sample was indeed that of Bernardo Provenzano, the newspaper said.
