Topic: Bernardo Strozzi

  Biography
In about 1610 he was allowed to leave his community to look after his sick and widowed mother, and after she died in 1630 he is said to have been pressurized to return, this accounting for his move in 1631 to Venice where he spent the rest of his life).
Strozzi was successful and prolific in both Genoa and Venice, painting portraits and allegorical and genre scenes (often of musicians) as well as religious works.
Strozzi's interpretation of these trends was highly original and combined with his thorough knowledge of other currents in art, from the Lombard school to the diffusion of Caravaggio's style.

Worcester Art Museum - The Calling of Saint Matthew
Strozzi, a Capuchin monk, was one of the greatest early seventeenth-century Italian painters.
Strozzi's picture is closely related to an altarpiece of the same subject painted around 1598 in Rome by Caravaggio, the influential painter who popularized the use of dramatic lighting effects.
It is not known whether Strozzi, a native of Genoa, ever traveled to Rome to see the painting by Caravaggio; he may have known it only through copies and reports of other artists.

 Barbara Strozzi History
Though born in Venice, Giulio, himself the illegitimate and later recognized son of Roberto Strozzi, was nonetheless a member of one of the most powerful families of Florence, second only to the Medici in wealth and influence.
The portrait, painted between 1635 and 1639 by Bernardo Strozzi (no close relation, but who also painted Giulio, Monteverdi, and other members of the academies) reveals a young woman, blushing, impressively décolleté and with flowers in her hair - a perfect impression of the mythical Flora, dispenser of charms both intellectual and physical.
In her hand she holds a viola da gamba, a type of early violoncello, and on the table next to her is duet music and a violin, an implication that she might be waiting for someone to come and play with her.

In the work of Bernardo Strozzi (1581-1644), the realistic-tradition taken from Caravaggio was melded with the brilliant late Baroque style.
A renewel in Venetian painting was signalled by the arrival of Domenico Fetti (1589-1623) from Rome, the German Johann Liss (c.1595-1631), and the Genoese Bernardo Strozzi.

Old Woman at the Mirror by STROZZI, Bernardo
The theme of this painting has a long tradition: the old woman who has not learned to give her life any other meaning but that of ornament and vanity, and who is unable to see the truth or recognize her true self in the mirror.
Strozzi's formulation, however, is both individual and new.
It makes the most of the surface values, deliberately contrasting the wrinkled skin of the old woman with the fresh complexion of her servant and juxtaposing the firm and rounded forms of youth with the withered slackness of old age.

Bernardo Strozzi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bernardo's background is likely not closely associated with the Florentine mercantile Strozzi family.
When she died, Bernardo was reluctant to return to the monastery and moved to Venice to avoid confinement in a monastery in 1631.
But by the second decade of the 17th century, while working in Venice, Strozzi had synthesized a personal style which fused painterly influences of the North (including Rubens and Veronese) with a monumental realistic starkness.

He was a prolific easel painter who painted many altarpieces and, with Gioacchino Assereto and Orazio de’ Ferrari, created a lyrical, richly coloured manner that influenced the later development of the Genoese Baroque.
He studied with Bernardo Castello (ii), then with Bernardo Strozzi; he adopted Strozzi’s manner so completely that his pictures were confused with those of his master.
Some of these compositions survive, but they can usually be distinguished from Strozzi’s by a thinner application of paint, expressive van Dyckian heads, tapered hands and tightly rolled drapery sleeves.

Basin with Scenes from the Life of Cleopatra (Getty Museum)
This large and elaborately molded silver basin depicts episodes from the story of Cleopatra, the legendary queen of Egypt, and the Roman leader, Marc Antony.
Although the basin's design derives from a sketch by Genoese artist Bernardo Strozzi, the high relief of the figures, some of whom are modeled almost in the round, the Mannerist turbulence of the battle scene, and the use of depth and perspective indicate the work of a northern European artist, perhaps one from Flanders.
The detail and delicacy of the silverwork of this basin suggest that it was ceremonial rather than functional; it was probably exhibited on a buffet on the most festive occasions.
