Bernart de Ventadorn - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bernart de Ventadorn (1130-1140 – 1190-1200), also known as Bernart de Ventadour, was a troubador composer and poet.
According to the troubadour Uc de Saint Circ (1217?-1253?), Bernart was possibly the son of a baker at the castle of Ventadour (Ventadorn), in Corrèze, France.
Bernart is often credited with being the most important influence on the development of the trouvère tradition in northern France, since he was well known there, his melodies were widely circulated, and the early composers of trouvère music seem to have imitated him.

Bernart de Ventadorn (1130-1140 – 1190-1200) was a troubador composer and poet.
Yet another source, a satirical poem written by a younger contemporary, Piere d'Alvernhe, indicates that he was the son of either a servant, a soldier, or a baker, and his mother was also either a servant or a baker.
From evidence given in Bernart's early poem, Lo temps vai e ven e vire, he most likely learned the art of singing and writing from his protector, the Count of Eble.

Although troubadours frequently came from humble origins— Bernart de Ventadorn may have been the son of a castle's baker— the trobairitz were nobly born.
Throughout the 13th century, among the accomplishments necessary for a woman at court were the ability to sing, play instruments, and write jocs partis, or partimen (a debate or dialogue in the form of a poem).
Comtessa de Día or Beatriz de Día (flourished late 12th/early 13th century) was the daughter of Count Isoard II of Día (a town on the Drôme in the marquisate of Provence).

In an analysis of the Troubadour Bernart De Ventadorn and the philosopher Abelard, this essay will argue that there is a great deal of inner turmoil discovered from within both of the twelfth century writers.
Ventadorn’s turmoil is concentrated on another being, the woman of his affections, and the emotions he feels towards her.
Ventadorn goes back and forth between proclaiming his unconditional love for his lady, and then threatening to take that love away.

Merwin traces the troubadour tradition to the 12th century and the great Bernart de Ventadorn, whose pastoral songs and narrative poems have survived for 900 years.
Merwin first encountered the songs and poems of Bernart de Ventadorn as a young translator of the archaic language known as Old Occitan.
Modern forms of Occitan are still spoken in southern France and Monaco, although all of its dialects are often referred to as Provençal.

The accounts, which are known to be fanciful and are therefore highly suspect, record that Bernart was the son of servants in the castle of Eble II, viscount of Ventadorn (near Limoges).
He fell in love with the lady of the castle about whom he wrote a number of songs, and was therefore banished from the castle.
Another account suggests that he became abbot of the Benedictine monastery of Saint-Martin de Tulle and continued composing.

By 1170, poets such as Jaufrè Rudel and Bernart de Ventadorn had codified the motifs and language that would become the basis for European love lyric.
For Dante (DVE II vi), Occitan works of poets such as Giraut de Bornelh, Folquet de Marseille, Arnaut Daniel, and Aimerics de Pegulha serve as direct lyric models.
The majority of the surviving manuscripts of Occitan verse were produced in northern Italy, where Italian versification was viewed as a natural continuation of the literary heritage of Provençal lyric and the traditions of the novas, vidas and razos.

There, his home there was on the grounds of the ruins of the castle once occuppied by the legendary bard, Bernartz de Ventadorn.
It was Ezra Pound who advised Merwin to "read the seeds, not the twigs of poetry," and Merwin studied the Troubadours to learn about poetry from its source, in a language older than French.
NPR's Renee Montagne recently spoke with Merwin about his new memoir, The Mays of Ventadorn, about his time in the French countryside, chronicled in a book for the National Geographic "Directions" series.
