Bernborough, however, was bred by a chap called Harry Winton and was sold to Frank and John Bach for 150 guineas (just over A$300) who “on sold” the horse to an A. Hadwen as the Q.T.C. (Eagle Farm) wouldn’t accept nominations from the Bach’s.
Bernborough, therefore, was restricted to racing in Toowoomba from ages 2 to 6 inclusive, where he won 11 of his 19 starts, but had earned only a paltry 1000 pounds (A$2000 in prizemoney).

BERNBOROUGH   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
It's almost 60 years since the Toowomba Tornado has raced, but the undisputed opinion held by many old timers of the turf, is that this tall, handsome bay stallion was the best horse ever to be produced in Queensland.
With huge weights to carry, Mulley in the the stool and that chilling catch-cry of "here's Bernborough from the clouds", his sequence of 15 wins in top company must have been a thorn in the side of many a Bookmaker in the days when huge crowds flocked to see the races.
So as time rolls on and champions come and go, we'll stand by our history and look back to Bernborough, the Sunshine States immortal hero, the one who's stood the test of time, as one of the best ever, without a doubt.

 Walkabout - Oakey
The town's moment of glory came with the birth of the brilliant horse Bernborough at Rosalie Plains in 1939.
For the first four years of his life Bernborough was restricted to racing in the local area (because of a ban the Queensland Turf Club had placed on his owners) and he became something of a legend on the tracks around Toowoomba.
Oakey is now the home of the $13 million Australian Army Aviation Centre and it seemed appropriate that a museum should be established to record the history of army flying as well as the history of flight and the early history of the RAAF.

Both Cups have had their prizemoney increased from $200,000 to $500,000 after the Tasmanian racing industry was guaranteed a minimum $5 million in revenue from the introduction of betting exchange Betfair.
