		Switzerland is a federation of relatively autonomous (A small administrative division of a country) cantons, some of which have a history of confederacy that goes back more than 700 years, arguably putting them among the world's oldest surviving (A form of government whose head of state is not a monarch) republics.
		Switzerland proclaimed neutrality in (A war between the allies (Russia, France, British Empire, Italy, United States, Japan, Rumania, Serbia, Belgium, Greece, Portugal, Montenegro) and the central powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary, Turkey, Bulgaria) from 1914 to 1918) World War I and was not involved militarily in the conflict.
		Switzerland is not a member state of the (An international organization of European countries formed after World War II to reduce trade barriers and increase cooperation among its members) EU but applied for membership therein in May 1992.
