	The Great Bernera Lobster Pond
		Out of their element, and exposed to air and light, lobsters are short-lived: but during the colder weather when carefully packed in boxes, they are fairly tenacious of life, and reach Billingsgate from Lewis usually in good marketable condition.
		For some time in the 1950s the lobster ponds in Bernera and Stockinish were used in tandem in an interesting experiment.
		During the second season of the experiment three converted lifeboats bought with the help of Governement loans and grants increased the scope of the fishing fleet in Bernera, and several profitable long-distance trips were made to the Flannan Islands.

		By far the largest buildings in the area, Bernera Barracks is one of four such structures in Scotland, built by the Hanovarian Government to suppress the Jacobites.
		Bernera was built to house a garrison of up to 200 soldiers and is strategically located to control the crossing at Kylerhea.
		A little known legacy of the barracks, is the military road constructed over the Mam Ratigan to Glen Shiel, parts of which are still in use today.

		Great Bernera, or simply Bernera, proves how popular the policy of building fixed links to the smaller islands can be.
		At the start of the 1950s the 400 residents were so keen to bridge the 150m gap between Bernera and Lewis they threatened to build their own causeway by dynamiting the cliffs on either side.

		The newly extended and refurbished Bernera and Tir Mor Community Centre was officially opened on Friday 25th May. A great number of locals and others turned up for the ceremony, Calum Murdo Maclean, 16 Kirkibost acted as M.C for the evening, which began with a prayer by Rev. Donald Campbell, Free Church Manse.
		All the guests spoke of their pleasure in being involved in the project, and of the excellent Community spirit which exists in the Bernera area.
		The assembled crowd were then kept entertained by members of the local Highland dancing school, and a very fine buffet was served in the new cafe.
