BERNHARD SEVERIN INGEMANN (1789-1862), Danish poet and novelist, was born at Torkildstrup, in the island of Falster, on the 28th of May 1789.
His studies were interrupted by the English invasion, and on the first night of the bombardment of the city Ingemann stood with the young poet Blicher on the walls, while the shells whistled past them, and comrades were killed on either side.
In 1846 Ingemann was nominated director of Sorb College, a post from which he retired in 1849.

Bernhard Severin Ingemann (born May 28, 1789 in Thorkildstrup, Falster, Denmark; died February 24, 1862 in Sorø) was a Danish novelist and poet.
First of all Ingemann is known and famous for his lyrics and his hymns.
Often criticised for sweetishness, naivity and artificial unsteadiness Ingemann was in his elder years much respected and after the death of Oehlenschläger he was regarded the unofficial “poet’s king” of Denmark.

Ingemann’s text was published for the first time in the Danish periodical Dansk Kirketidende Nr.
Except for a significant difference in the third verse, and some changes that had to be made to adapt the music to a new text, it is basically the same version of the tune as found in Berggreen 1843.
Already in 1852 Ingemann’s text was included in Roskilde-Psalmebogen (a proposal for a new hymn) in a revision probably by Ingemann himself or at least with his permission.

During the bombardment of Copenhagen in 1807, Ingemann was on guard duty on the ramparts as a member of the student corps.
For Ingemann, the city was a contrast to the old parsonage on the island of Falster where he had grown up.
As a young student in Copenhagen, Ingemann was more preoccupied with the Gothic literature of the time and among other things wrote several exciting fairy tales and stories.

 B. S. Ingemann Biography | Dictionary of Literary Biography
Many religious scholars deride Ingemann's hymns as characterized more by a naive natural religion than by a strictly Lutheran Christianity.
Despite theologians' distrust, Ingemann's work is loved by laypeople.
Even Ingemann never thought of these simple and idyllic texts as anything special, particularly when one considers the range of his literary output: suspenseful novels, fairy tales, lachrymose tragedies, versified travel books, contemporary satire, emotionally sophisticated love poems, religious allegories, hair-raising thrillers, and heretical statements concerning the soul's continued development following bodily death.

Bernhard Severin Ingemann and Steen Steensen Blicher seemed in many ways to be absolute contrasts--they were of different natures, had different fates, and lived very different lives.
The young Ingemann had begun as a writer of highly exalted poetry, romantic horror stories (some of them deserving to be included in the volumes of spine-chillers that have again become the fashion, as they are really good in a gruesome way), and had been very successful with his romantic tragedies in smoothly flowing verse.
In a beautiful villa on the shores of a charming inland lake, Ingemann lived a happy married life, the happiness somewhat damped by childlessness and by the frail health of Mrs.

No, Andersen was writing stories for children until at least 1843, but he also liked to include adults among his readers.
The same is true of Ingemann's very beautiful and very simple morning songs in praise of children's naivety, and indeed of a third important work from the middle of the 1900s, Hans Vilhelm Kaalund's Fabler for Børn [Fables for Children], inspired by the fables written by the Germans Johann Wilhelm Heys and Otto Speckler.
