Marco Berni was born in Italy at the turn of the last century and emigrated with his family in 1921.
Berni kept his membership at the Cardiff branch of the Italian fascist party, even after moving to Exeter, and finally to Plymouth in the mid-1930s.
After being arrested in 1941, because of suspicions that he sympathised with the cause of fascism, Marco Berni was interred until 1943.

 1979 - SLBS
The Chair was in transit from Clacton to Brighton for reasons which were not fully clarified, and as a diplomatic gesture, attended a gastronomic pre-prandial in the Berni Inn beforehand, where guests were being entertained to dinner (the SAR had some vouchers to use up).
The guests were firstly Miss Margaret Giffen, who could be said to be representing both Sweden and Scotland, but merely came in her capacity as one of the SAR's cousins, being the third of that subset to have attended a meeting.
On exit from the Berni Inn, the WPR was found wandering up and down muttering, but on being bought a drink he agreed to forget the four days he had spent waiting.

Am I not punished enough in not being born an Englishman?" The crowd cheered him and escorted him safely back to the inn where he was staying.
The resident, Freytag, was not a very wise person (though he probably did not, as Voltaire would have it, spell "poésie" (poetry) "poéshie"); constant references to Frederick were necessary; and the affair was prolonged so that Madame Denis had time to join her uncle.
He was followed, arrested, his niece seized separately, and sent to join him in custody; and the two, with the secretary Collini, were kept close prisoners at an inn called the Goat.

The ultimate seal of approval is if Mara Berni, the owner's wife, stops off at your table for a chat.
Described by Princess Diana as her "mother-confessor", Mara is the heart and soul of San Lorenzo--which is why it's sometimes referred to by the cognoscenti as "the Berni Inn".
If the Bernis have a secret it's that they don't try too hard--their philosophy is, "If it aint broke, don't fix it." Maybe if they had updated the décor at some point in the last century--or changed the menu--they might have broken the spell.
