Bernissart (Municipality, Province of Hainaut, Belgium)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
The municipality of Bernissart (11,470 inhabitants; 4,344 ha) is located on the border with France, 20 km west of Mons (Belgium) and 15 km north-east of Valenciennes (France).
Bernissart was located in the northern limit of the French-Belgian coal basin.
Coal was no longer extracted from the third pit of the Bernissart colliery, but the big tower with the wheel used as a lift for the cages and the skips was still standing, at a height of 80 m.

Bernissart Iguanodons and their significance (long)
A total of some 30 skeletons were discovered at the Bernissart site in the late 19th century, all but one belong to the large species Iguanodon bernissartensis (Boulenger vide van Beneden, 1881), a single smaller skeleton was referred to Iguanodon mantelli (von Meyer, 1832).
The herding theory of the Bernissart animals was never really based on evidence, but more on the dramatic picture of a the complete group falling from a cliff, when fleeing from a predator.
While Dollo was clearly ahead of his time when he studied the Bernissart specimens, the research of the abundant fossils was reduced to nearly zero after he left the Museum.

The Bernissart Iguanodons, 1884   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
In 1878, deep underground in Bernissart, Belgium, miners tapped into what would prove to be a true mother lode of dinosaur fossils--dozens of Iguanodon skeletons jumbled together in a rocky matrix, many fully articulated.
One conclusion was inescapable--after decades of debate over whether Iguanodon was bipedal or quadrupedal, the Bernissart specimens confirmed that Iguanodon was bipedal, and Dollo had it restored with a very upright posture.
Dollo's pose determined how iguanodons were be exhibited for nearly a century, especially when the British Museum in 1895 acquired a cast of a Bernissart Iguanodon and set it up in their Reptile Gallery.

 Natuurinformatie - The Bernissart Crocodiles
Alongside the iguanodons found in Bernissart there were also four crocodile   skeletons belonging to two different species, both of which are small when compared to recent species.
Until recently the Goniopholis specimens of Bernissart were assigned to this species, but recent research (1999) has revealed that they belong to a new, as yet undescribed species.
Some think it a typical Mesosuchia, and older group from the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods, and others say that is shows the first characteristics of the younger Eusuchia, the modern crocodiles that evolved later, particularly in the Tertiary period (less than 65 million years ago).

The early reconstructions by Owen of a quadruped were scoffed at by some as being curious relics of a bygone age.
This notion of bipedality was totally vindicated in 1878 when a whole herd of Iguanodon were found buried 321m deep in a coalmine at Bernissart, Belgium.

This uncertainty persisted for a century thereafter, but it is now understood that the two groups share unique features that indeed make the Dinosauria a natural group.
In 1878 a spectacular discovery was made in the town of Bernissart, Belgium, where several dozen complete articulated skeletons of Iguanodon were accidentally uncovered in a coal mine during the course of mining operations.
Under the direction of the Royal Institute of Natural Science of Belgium, thousands of bones were retrieved and carefully restored over a period of many years.

The researchers thus entered upon the study of prehistoric caves, fossil-bearing layers of the country, freshwater fauna, insect populations.
Remarkable fossils were added to the collections: a mammoth of Lierre, a rhinoceros of Blaton, cetaceans of Antwerp, turtles of the Maastrichtian and Bruxellian, mosasaurs of Baudour, but especially iguanodons of Bernissart about which more shall be said below.
