Bernoulli Box - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bernoulli disks come in the following capacities: 35 MB, 44 MB, 65 MB, 90 MB (late 1980s), 105 MB, 150 MB, and in 1994, 230 MB.
The original Bernoulli boxes came in capacities of 5, 10, and 20 MB.
The Bernoulli Box drives were the direct predecessors of Iomega's popular Zip drive, introduced in 1994, which used a similar technology, although smaller and not compatible with Bernoulli disks or drives.

A box may be square, oblong, round oroval, or of an even less normal shape ; it isusually opened by raising, sliding or removing the lid, which may be fastened by a catch, hasp or lock.
Of the boxes which possess some attraction beyond their immediate purpose the feminine work-box is the commonest.
In the 18th century no lady was without her work-box, and, especially in the second half of that period, much taste and elaborate pains were expended upon the case, which was oftenexceedingly dainty and elegant.

A Bernoulli Box is a removable hard disk cartridge storage device or to put it another way, diskette drives that accommodate 10 or 20 megabyte cartridge diskettes.
The two advertised and perceived uses of a Bernoulli subsystem are that it provides a single PC with a virtually unlimited amount of hard disk storage space, and functions as a backup system that generates ‘working’ copies.
This requirement was met by attaching the Bernoulli Box to a three-station switching device, purchasing Bernoulli Box control cards for each of the three computers, and connecting the new computers to the switching device.

Jakob Bernoulli Jakob Bernoulli (Basel, December 27, 1654 - August 16, 1705), also known as Jacob, Jacques or James Bernoulli was a Swiss mathematician and scientist and the older brother of Johann Bernoulli.
Jakob Bernoulli met Robert Boyle and Robert Hooke on a trip to England in 1676, after which he devoted his life to science and mathematics.
The terms Bernoulli trial and Bernoulli Numbers result from this work, and are named after him.

Iomega:25 Years of Storage Technology Leadership
Iomega’s founders employed an aerodynamic principle known as the “Bernoulli effect” to pull the Alpha-10’s flexible disk up to the drive’s read-write heads, where a cushion of air protected the heads from hitting the magnetic storage platter.
Bernoulli drives had the capacity of a hard drive, the portability of a floppy disk, and offered two revolutionary advantages: the ability to add unlimited capacity by utilizing more Bernoulli disks, and the ability to transport large files and store them away from the computer for security.
Iomega’s 1982 success with the Bernoulli Box was the first demonstration of the engineering talent and can-do spirit that motivate Iomega employees today.

 Sampling distribution handout
We’ve considered a sequence of n independent draws from a Bernoulli box, a box that has only two kinds of tickets: 0’s and 1’s.
The proportion of 1’s in the box is p (and the proportion of 0’s in the box is 1-p).
We assume that the guesses on the different questions are independent, and the probability of a correct answer is the same (1/3) for each question, so the binomial distribution is appropriate.

 Bernoulli's principle
Bernoulli's principle, physical principle formulated by Daniel Bernoulli that states that as the speed of a moving fluid (liquid or gas) increases, the pressure within the fluid decreases.
The phenomenon described by Bernoulli's principle has many practical applications; it is employed in the carburetor and the atomizer, in which air is the moving fluid, and in the aspirator, in which water is the moving fluid.
As a fluid moves from a wider pipe into a narrower pipe or a constriction, a corresponding volume must move a greater distance forward in the narrower pipe and thus have a greater speed.

For example, Daniel Bernoulli is described as having done work with fluid dynamics, and Bernoulli's Theorem mentions the constant sum of the pressure head, velocity head, and height.
The Bernoulli box is described as using technology pioneered by Bernoulli, but this material does not explain the use of a high speed air jet which maintains an air gap while keeping it vanishingly small.
Since Bernoulli's bio also mentions electronics, some readers could be forgiven for assuming that this was his contribution to the Bernoulli drive, rather than the same principle that keeps planes in the air.

Zip drive - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The zip brand was also used for an external CD writer known as the Zip-CD but despite the name this had nothing technically in common with the zip disks.
The Zip disk uses smaller media (about the size of a 9cm (3.5") microfloppy, rather than the compact disc-sized Bernoulli media), and a simplified drive design that reduced its overall cost.
This resulted in a disk that has all of the 9 cm (3.5") floppy's convenience, but holds much more data, with performance that is much quicker than a standard floppy drive (though not directly competitive with hard drives).
