It was ravaged by Englishmen and pirates and sank back into poverty and oblivion before the Swedish king Gustaf III in 1784 persuaded king Louis XVI to cede St Bartholomew in exchange for French trading privileges in Gothenburg.
On the 14 May 1995 Rue de Piteå was inaugurated close to the restored Wall House in Gustavia.
He is the only person on the island with a Swedish sounding family name, presumably derived from the Swedish governor Berndt Robert Gustav Stackelberg, who was in charge of the island from 1812 to 1816.
