The county was named for John Macpherson Berrien, a Savannah lawyer who served variously as a judge (with a stint on the Supreme Court of Georgia), a state senator, a U.S. senator, and the U.S. attorney general under President Andrew Jackson.
Informally, Berrien styles itself the "Bell Pepper Capital of the World," and the economy of the county is primarily agricultural, concentrating on tobacco, corn, soybeans, peanuts, cotton, vegetables, hogs, beef, and forest products.

The southwest of the county is drained by the Galien River and its tributaries.

With the advent of war Hannah Carlisle of Buchanan accompanied the 2nd Michigan Cavalry to St. Louis, was assigned as a nurse, and served in that capacity for the duration.
In 1894 the county moved its governmental seat to St. Joseph and the courthouse passed into private hands and became a community social center, a militia hall, and finally for nearly half a century, a house of worship for the Berrien Springs Seventh-Day Adventist Church.
Berrien County preserves its rich heritage in two excellent museums, Fort St. Joseph in Niles, and the Old Courthouse Complex in Berrien Springs.

Berrien County’s first sizable commercial peach orchard was planted in 1847 by George Parmelee of Bainbridge Township.
Berrien County dropped from being the foremost peach-producing county in the state—with more acreage than all other peach-growing counties combined—to ninth.
In Berrien County the number of peach trees dropped from 1,377,734 to 267,800; in adjacent Van Buren County the orchards were nearly swept clean.

After beginning the process in 1978, the department submitted their chosen route to the federal government for review and in 1981 the Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) for the 19-mile segment of freeway was approved and the long, slow northerly march of the freeway toward I-94 began.
This was the fourth of the five "phases" of the freeway in Berrien Co and removed through traffic off the rather dangerous former route of US-31 between Berrien Springs and I-94.
Total cost for this final phase of the freeway in Berrien Co, which will include improvements to the one mile of I-94 between the BL I-94 and I-196 interchanges, is expected to be approximately $60 million.

VALDOSTA — Berrien County residents gathered at Nashville’s courthouse square Saturday for the culmination of the county’s three-month sesquicentennial celebration.
During Berrien’s centennial parade in 1956, about 40 young ladies of the area participated in a contest to be named Miss Berrien County.
The residents of Berrien actually began celebrating the 150th year of their county’s establishment in February with a charter signing reenactment.
