The area around Berrima was once occupied by the Dharawal Aborigines whose language provided the town's name from a word said to mean 'to the south'.
Berrima was meant to be the administrative, commercial and manufacturing centre of the land between the Cowpastures (Camden) and Goulburn.
Berrima Lavender Farm in Market Place is a cottage garden nursery specialising in lavenders, herbs, perennials and old world roses.

Berrima is north of Moss Vale on the Old Hume Highway and the Wingecarribee River.
Progress on a road through Berrima to the south was slow and it gradually developed as a stop-over for travellers rather than a busy central hub for the area.
The whole village of Berrima is now under a preservation order of the National Trust and is one of the most charming places to spend a few hours in in the Southern Highlands.

Berrima was established in the 1830s during a time of great exploration and expansion in New South Wales.

Despite its historic aspects, Berrima residents and tourism officials are keen not to have the village dismissed as a museum piece.

Berrima Correctional Centre is a medium/minimum security institution for females situated in the Southern Tablelands, 125km south-west of Sydney and 14km from Mittagong.
Berrima is signposted from the surrounding towns of Mittagong, Bowral and Moss Vale.

 SS Berrima
Berrima subsequently returned to Sydney and, despite plans to employ her as an armed merchant cruiser, she was paid off in October for conversion to a troop transport.
In her new role, SS Berrima sailed for the Middle East in December 1914 as part of the second troop convoy, carrying Australian and New Zealand troops and towing the submarine AE2.
Berrima continued to work as a trooper until 18 February 1917, when she was torpedoed in the English Channel off Portland and beached.

Berrima was built by Fisher Bros. at La Perouse for Australian Oil Refinery Ltd., (Caltex Oil Refinery) at Kurnell.
At the time A.O.R.1 was launched, Stannards already had a contract with the Maritime Services Board to supply a pilot cutter for all shipping movements into and out of Botany Bay, and A.O.R.1 provided this service for around ten years until replaced by the MSB’s own pilot cutters.
Stannard Bros. later purchased A.O.R.1 and renamed her Berrima.

 Berrima Court House - The History and The Building
Berrima Court House stands next to the imposing facade of the Berrima Gaol, and overlooks the historic village of Berrima.
Restored by the Trustees of the School of Arts in 1936, it was also used intermittently by the Berrima Village Trust and Berrima District Art Society in the 1950s and 60s as a theatre, gallery, and library.

 Berrima
Located in a picturesque valley on a bend of the Wingecarribee River, Berrima was chosen by Governor Bourke to be the adminstrative centre of the County of Camden, which comprised new lands discovered and settled to the south of the new colony from Cowpastures (Camden) to Argyle (Goulburn).
Berrima did not remain for long the centre it was intended to be.
The first, and probably most important, was the building of the southern railway which bypassed Berrima and resulted in the development of new towns to the east which became the main centres of population in the Highlands.

Berrima is in the rural Southern Highlands of NSW, Australia, midway between Sydney and Canberra, and is about 90 minutes drive from the centre of Sydney.
Berrima Horse Trials was founded in the wet winter of 1989, when Vince Roche gathered a group of Southern Highlands equestrian enthusiasts together, walked them around his parents 160 acre property "Araluen" at Sutton Forest and showed them where he proposed to build a cross country course.
The group agreed to found Berrima Horse Trials, and settled on a philosophy that remains sound eleven years on … the provision of high quality cross country fences with as much attention given to the lower grades as to the more elite classes.

Neither the organising committee, Berrima Horse Trials Inc., the instructors or the owners of the grounds accept any liability for any accident, damage, injury or illness to horses, riders, owners, ground spectators or any other persons or property whatsoever.
Rules for the competition: the first prize of a rug plus $50 will be awarded to the horse and rider with a clear round and time elapsed closest to the optimum time.
However, the EFA's insurer (Berrima Horse Trials is insured through the EFA) will extend the clubs public liability insurance to non-members of the club to allow them to attend an active day such as a Training Day.

Berrima District Rescue Squad commemorated its 21st Birthday on 18th April, 1998 with a day of celebration including the dedication of a new rescue vehicle and dinner at its rescue head quarters.
Outside the major metropolitan areas of NSW road accidents, while traumatic and requiring immediate rescue, are not common enough (thankfully) to justify a paid full time rescue service.
Berrima is thus a "primary response" rescue unit unlike us who are designated as "secondary response".

One of the prisoners in Berrima at the time said it was 'a drug free gaol,' a privileged gaol where most people were kept for educational purposes or for protection.
