The NSW Department of Corrective Services’s decision to classify an offender to a particular correctional facility depends on a number of factors; for example, the offender’s security classification and legal status (sentenced or unsentenced), the offence that was committed, and the level of protection required.
Correctional staff may also place an offender into protection at any other time if, as a result of any incident(s), the offender is at risk of injury from other inmates.
Correctional authorities, echoing the principles of punishment and sentencing, express their primary goal in their mission statement as being the protection of the community by the secure containment and management of offenders in a safe and humane environment.

Anglicare is most interested in assisting in any developmental work aimed at finding new approaches to these glaring areas of need and to assist in the training, pastoral support and supervision of any parish clergy who could include hospital or prison ministry as part of their normal ministerial duty.

The interesting thing is that due to my inmates undertaking the permaculture module, they have discovered that they really enjoy working out in the garden and learning about how nature plays a huge role in the success of their garden.
I have been approached by the Berrima Centre, which will house female inmates this year, to run a Horticulture program and a site that I have been shown has been set aside for a potential organic veggie gardens and poultry.
The cooperation between TAFE and AEVTI (Adult Education and Vocational Training Institute - the educational arm of Corrective Services) and the management, overseers and officers of all the correctional centres is extremely good and has assisted many inmates to have the opportunity to receive an education that they may not have had previously.

That it took an Australian to suffer the cruelty and indignities of our detention centres to create the backlash we are now witnessing just goes to show how effective Howard and his fellow travellers were in whipping up a xenophobic frenzy that still sweeps this nation.

Following extensive investigations by police from Kings Cross Local Area Command and Camden Local Area Command, the two escapees and a 41-year-old woman were arrested at 5pm at a park in Riley Street, by three Kings Cross detectives.
It is alleged the two women escaped from Berrima Correctional Centre about 12.40pm, on Monday, 18 October 2004, by making a hole in the wall of a screen-printing room.
