Berserker (Saberhagen): Definition and Links by Encyclopedian.com
Fred Saberhagen[?]’s Berserker series is a space opera where robotic machines intend to destroy all life.
The Berserkers were a doomsday weapon from an ancient interstellar war[?].
Saberhagen came up with the Berserker as the rationale for the story on the spur of the moment, but the basic concept was so fruitful, with so many possible ramifications that it has since been the basis for many of his stories.

Berserker (Saberhagen) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Fred Saberhagen's Berserker series is a space opera in which robotic self-replicating machines intend to destroy all organic life.
These berserkers, a doomsday weapon left over from an interstellar war 50,000 years ago, are killer spaceships furnished with machine intelligence, operating from asteroid-sized berserker bases where they are capable of building more Berserkers and auxiliary machines.
Saberhagen came up with the berserker as the rationale for the story on the spur of the moment, but the basic concept was so fruitful, with so many possible ramifications, that he has used it as the basis of many of his stories.

Crescent Blues | Author Interview: "Fred Saberhagen: Pushing Humanity's Envelope"
Saberhagen's explorations take his readers from the far-flung reaches of outer space and heroes and heroines defining human courage in the face of overwhelming odds to fantastic realms where a mask can change a man into a god -- weighted with all the baggage that godhood entails.
Fred Saberhagen: In re-reading the original sources on the Golden Fleece, what struck me most sharply was the way the Fleece utterly disappears as soon as Jason has won it and succeeded in bringing it home.
Fred Saberhagen: My version of Dracula was launched by my re-reading Stoker's original, and being struck by the fact that this titanic character was hardly ever on stage, though of course central to the book.

"Berserker" is the name given to the dreadnought of unknown origin that invades the twin-planet system of Prairie and Timber just as it's on the brink of war with the Huveans of another system - and as Belgola, the Twin Worlds president, is turning his rule over to a computer.
This time in his long-running saga, Saberhagen shows the Berserkers' kidnapping of humans and reprogramming of them into "goodlife" --that is, as collaborators --from the inside, and he makes the collaborators more understandable and the Berserkers even more terrifying than they have ever been.
Enough aspects of both the Berserkers and their human foes remain to be delineated to keep the series going for as long as Saberhagen wishes, which will probably not be as long as most dedicated readers would like.

The Berserker Base collaboration is not exactly a Saberhagen novel, but it bears his indelible stamp.
Saberhagen has also written beginning and ending pieces completing a kind of umbrella tale which arches over the other works.
The last short story in Berserker Base is Larry Niven's "A Teardrop Falls." This story revolves around the fact that the berserkers' builders equipped them with an intelligence equal or greater than that of human beings.

Saberhagen's prose is plain, and the universe he gives us a bit unadorned and, by contemporary standards, too human-dominated.
BErserker Fury was a space version of the Battle of Midway, but the real battle was less confusing.
I first noticed Saberhagen becoming redundant in "Berserker Kill" (1993), but it was painfully obvious in "Berserker Fury." While his early Berserker stories are well-crafted and crisply written, this novel is not.

Saberhagen has given SF one of its most powerful images of future war in his Berserker series.
The structure of this Berserker book is a bit loose - it has perhaps 10 stories bracketed by the narration of an alien historian (whose introduction to the book is one of its finest parts).
Saberhagen applies an admirable minimalism when writing, though at times he will indulge in descriptive prose (most notably in the excellent final story).

Berserker, by Fred Saberhagen - A Large Print Reviews Book Review
Their main problem is that every time they devise an effective method of attacking a berserker, the intelligent, self-aware death machines adapt, learning from and even toying with their human prey.
The Berserkers have long since learned the language of man, and they have even taken human captives who have been forced to serve their mechanical masters.
In his novel Berserker, Saberhagen lays the foundation for the series, and the world he has created in which man is forced to fight for the very survival of humanity against the nearly indestructible doomsday machines they call Berserkers.

"Berserker" stories — many of the books are short story collections — describe humans' fight with the Berserkers, ancient asteroid-sized killing machines and their smaller robotic minions designed to destroy all living things in the universe.
In later stories there are "goodlife" — i.e., sophont traitors or collaborators — who cooperate with the berserker machines to stay alive, at least for a while.
The Berserker stories most likely inspired the Star Trek episode The Doomsday Machine in which it is postulated by Kirk that the giant robot planet-killer might be the remnants of two long gone warring races.
