Bersilat emphasizes leg techniques, but punches, throws and holds are so important.
Generally practiced in semi-seclusion, its moves are passed from master to disciple under a vow of secrecy, reminiscent of Chinese kung-fu.

Malaya was influenced culturally by India and is likely that Indian methods influenced the development of Malayan weaponless fighting art called Bersilat.
Bersilat means "self-defense", but according to legend its origin came from a woman named Bersilat who, through a series of dreams acquired a knowledge of the fundamentals of empty handed fighting.
Bersilat originated in Sumatra, according to experts and exists today into forms: Silat puat which is mainly for display, and silatbuah, which is used in actual combat.

For example, looking at the Malaysian art of Bersilat, trying out a few of their techniques, then saying to yourself, "I like their elbow technique, I think I'll add it to my style" is a step that is self-delusional.
To understand those techniques you need to go into the Malaysian art and train like they do, feel it, experience it for awhile, both in the doing and the receiving, until you've got a grasp on it.
You must become a Bersilat man in order to truly understand Bersilat techniques, attitudes, training methods, etc..

I do not know why many JKD people think that Penjak Silat is Indonesian and that Bersilat is Malaysian, well at least one of my former JKD teachers claim that.
Penjak Silat is just a common term that can be used for any Silat styles.
The term bersilat just means to do silat, the "ber" in front of the "silat" is just like putting the "ing" at the end of a word to imply action (as in running, boxing, punching).
