Bert Berns - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bertrand Russell Berns (November 8, 1929 - December 30, 1967) (a/k/a Bert Russell and Bert Berns) was one of the great American songwriters and record producers of the 1960s.
Berns was also one of the only American record producers to travel across the Atlantic to London, where he produced a number of British Decca artists such as Them ("Here Comes The Night," "Baby Please Don't Go" and "Gloria"), and Lulu.
Bert Berns' death in the last days of 1967 marked an end to the golden era of rock and soul music.

Bang Records was created by Bert Berns in 1965 together with his partners from Atlantic Records: Ahmet Ertegun, Neshui Ertegun and Jerry Wexler (Gerald).
When Berns died suddenly on December 30, 1967 as a result of a rheumatic heart condition, his wife Ilene Berns took over management.
Berns' young widow signed singer/songwriter Paul Davis, who had a number of hit records in the 1970s and 1980s, including songs such as "Ride 'Em Cowboy," "I Go Crazy," "Sweet Life," "Cool Night" and "65 Love Affair." Ilene Berns also signed and developed RandB acts Brick ("Dazz") and Peabo Bryson.

Bert Berns was one of the great rock and soul songwriters of the 1960s, as well as being a producer of note.
When writing and producing for soul artists, Berns was notable for his ability to combine the best of pop and R&B. As with the compositions of his sometimes writing partner Jerry Ragovoy, there was an earthy gospel and down-home soul feel that was surprising coming from the pen of a white New Yorker.
Berns, however, was more pop savvy than Ragovoy, as can be most audibly heard in his productions for the Drifters, which often backed the vocal group with smooth yet inventive strings (as on "Under the Boardwalk").

If you think you've not heard of Bert Berns, you've certainly heard his work – from the Beatles' (and Isley Brothers') hit "Twist and Shout" to Janis Joplin's "Piece of My Heart," to "Hang on Sloopy" and "Everybody Needs Somebody to Love," Berns was one of the great unknown songwriters of the 1960s.
Which isn't to knock Leiber-Stoller, but Berns was certainly their equal – and though he passed in 1967, his memory surely deserves the boost this excellent new compilation should provide.
Berns worked with a lot of soul and RandB artists as a producer and arranger as well as composer, and so it seems appropriate that the versions of some of his best-known songs are the original ones sung by those artists.

You hear strange, astonishingly delicate bits of instrumentation -- guitar triplets, a hesitating piano, room to breathe all through the arrangements -- that produce the feeling that the great voices Berns recorded were not quite of this earth.

The first time I heard Bert Berns and Jerry Ragovoy's "Piece of My Heart" was on Cheap Thrills, the 1968 album by Big Brother and the Holding Company with Janis Joplin.
That journey led, among many places, to a lot of music that Berns had a hand in creating, much of which you'll find on this absolutely essential collection.
There are so many Berns tunes that could be here (Ben E. King's "Stand by Me," for instance, or the Drifters' "Under the Boardwalk"), but the only really surprising omission – a case of bad blood, apparently – is one of Berns's most famous tunes, "Brown Eyed Girl," the huge hit by Van Morrison.

When Berns died of heart failure in 1967, at age 38, he had already cemented a legacy few songwriters or artists would equal, let alone surpass.
That his death prematurely robbed him of further triumphs is no reason for Berns' name and achievements to have remained unrecognized by critics, panels, and institutions.
