The Ambrose 'sound' was special - the band benefitted from the superb technical skills of the players and the fine arrangements of Sid Phillips and Bert Barnes, and these combined to produce a unique sound full of warmth and intricate section playing with first rate solo work.
Bert Ambrose was born in London, England, in 1897 and as a young man emigrated to USA where he studied the violin.
Late in 1932 Ambrose appeared on the Regal-Zonophone label then in 1933 the band returned to the Brunswick label and also to the Embassy Club, Sid Phillips joined the band as reed player and arranger, and then in 1934 Ambrose recordings appeared again on the now parent blue label Decca, and this continued until 1947.

Though the theme sometimes feels a bit heavy-handed, Phillips provides unusual insights about how much a performer must play to his audience if he is to be successful, and through Bert Williams how demeaning that role can be, personally.
Beyond a few set pieces, Phillips shies away from a full-on dramatization of Williams and Walker's stage act.
Williams was the first black performer to don blackface and was a master, with partner George Walker, of the cakewalk.

Phillips is a diasporic writer, whose work rejects investment in national belonging, preferring instead the border spaces of the black Atlantic.

New York State Writers Institute - Caryl Phillips Sunday Gazette Article
About 10 years ago when he was reading, author Caryl Phillips came across a reference to a black performer named Bert Williams, who would don blackface and then play a bumbling, slow-witted racial stereotype to sold-out white audiences.
"Williams was a vaudeville performer," said Phillips in a recent phone interview, "and in the early 1900s, right around the turn of the century, he was the most famous black American entertainer."
"Dancing in the Dark" is divided into three acts and follows the rise and tragic fall of Bert Williams, a man who at one time was the director of his own performing company and even mounted the first all-black Broadway show.

Phillips shows that in fact English literature has never been homogenous: it has been shaped and influenced by outsiders for at least two hundred years.
The Africa of his ancestry, the Caribbean of his birth, the Britain of his upbringing, and the United States where he now lives are the focal points of award-winning writer Caryl Phillips's profound inquiry into evolving notions of home, identity, and belonging in an increasingly international society.
