Bert Jones - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jones was chosen in the first round, with the second overall pick in the 1973 NFL draft by the Baltimore Colts after an outstanding college career at Louisiana State University that included consensus All-American honors in 1972.
Jones was one of only three quarterbacks to achieve a 100+ passer rating during the entire decade of the 1970s, joining Dallas' Roger Staubach (1971) and Oakland's Ken Stabler (1976).
Jones was thus honored by the Associated Press as 1976's NFL Most Valuable Player and NFL Offensive Player of the Year, selected All-Pro and named to the Pro Bowl team.

Jones, a star at Louisiana State University, was drafted second overall by the Colts in 1973 to replace departed Hall of Fame passer Johnny Unitas.
Jones, who played at 6 feet 2 and 220 pounds, could see himself in Ramsey (6-3, 223), with that same quiet confidence, toughness in the pocket, natural leadership ability and the explosiveness with which he threw the football.
Jones led the Colts to three straight AFC East titles from 1975 to '77, but the franchise suffered from poor ownership, the roster rapidly deteriorated and Jones began to take a beating each Sunday from the Memorial Stadium crowd and opposing teams.

Yet Jones was arguably the best player in the NFL in 1976 when he earned the title of league's Most Valuable Player and a berth in the (then-nascent) Pro Bowl, a year that also saw him lead the league in passing yards and average yards per pass.
Jones also led the league in pass completions in 1977, and this is worth remembering, since that statistical category seems to be a connecting similarity among Belichick's three choices.
